Liviu Dragnea, elected as the Deputies’ Chamber speaker

PSD President Liviu Dragnea, was elected on Wednesday as the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber, with 216 pros and 101 cons. He was proposed for this position by the PSD group, and he was the only candidate. The vote was secret, with ballots.

“PSD Group’s proposal for the position of the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber is Deputy Liviu Dragnea” stated Eugen Nicolicea in the plenary session.

PSD President Liviu Dragnea stated on Wednesday that he will “probably” take over the leadership of the Deputies’ Chamber, at the “insistent” proposal of his fellows from PSD, saying that this position would allow him to be sure that the Government and Parliament respect the government program voted in the elections.

“I’ll have a very serious discussion with my fellows, I admit that this proposal to be the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber has been insistently made to me. Now I’m the one who decides, probably yes. But I want to think at it very seriously, because I want to see which is the position that allows me to be sure that the Government and the Parliament will bring a government program to an end”, Liviu Dragnea stated.

Liviu Dragnea, asked if he will take the leadership of the Deputies’ Chamber: Probably yes / I have the PM rod in my backpack; I’ll not burn it yet

PSD President Liviu Dragnea stated on Wednesday that he will “probably” take the leadership of the Deputies’ Chamber, at the “insistent” proposal of his fellows from PSD, saying that this position would allow him to be sure that the Government and Parliament respect the government program voted in the elections.

PSD President Liviu Dragnea was asked on Wednesday why he stated that he is not PM “for the moment”, and if he plans to become PM in the future; he said that the vote of December 11 and the PSD’s support have put in his backpack the rod of the head of the Executive, which he will not burn yet.

“People’s vote and PSD’s support have put a Prime-Minister rod in my backpack and I’ll keep it there. That’s why I said ‘for the moment’. I’ll not burn it yet. You never know”, Dragnea answered.

The explanations come after PSD President stated on Wednesday, after the consultations at Cotroceni, that he had the legitimate right to ask the PM position for himself, but “an unfair conviction and a profoundly unconstitutional law” made him not to ask this “for the moment”.

“As you know, PSD won the elections, and according to the customs in our country and in other countries, I had the legitimate right to ask the Prime-Minister position in the Romanian Government for myself” stated Liviu Dragnea, after the consultations with President Klaus Iohannis.

He stated that he didn’t ask the PM position, taking into account two issues. “I have taken into account the repeated statements of the Romanian President, and firstly, not secondarily, I’ve taken into account a law which is in force. Law is not a secondary matter for me, and I don’t wish a mandate which I could have start, to force an applicable law. An unfair conviction and a profoundly unconstitutional law didn’t let me ask this dignity for myself. For the moment! But I cannot throw over my shoulders a huge responsibility given by a massive vote of the people, a responsibility which is mine, because I designed and made together with my fellows, a government program which mainly brought us these votes”, Dragnea added.

Asked if he will take the leadership of the Deputies’ Chamber, Dragnea answered: “After this press conference, me and my colleagues will have a very serious discussion. I admit that this proposal was insistently made to me by my fellows and by CExN, only that I have to decide myself. Probably yes, but I want to think at it very seriously”.

He said that he wants to seriously think to this because he wants to see which is the position from which he can be sure that the Government and the Parliament will respect the government program.

“I want to be sure that the position that I’ll take is the one that gives me the maximum possibility to be ensure myself that the Government doesn’t deviate from the government program and that the Parliament enters into a serious process of regaining its credibility and of actually taking over the legislative initiative” Dragnea added.
