George Maior, Romania’s ambassador in Washington, said, in an interview granted to Romanian public broadcaster TVR, that in light of the contacts had until now, both with members of the Congress, the leadership of the Congress and the Republican Party, as well as with members of the team of new President, Donald Trump, he is confident that the strategic partnership of Romania with the USA will develop and deepen.
“In the sphere of economic relations, I believe there are plenty of opportunities, especially in the realm of energy, aspect strongly accentuated by all my interlocutors. Let’s not forget that Exxon operates in the Black Sea already, and that the Secretary of State (e.n. – Rex Tillerson) comes from this giant company,” the Romanian diplomat added. “We have serious advantages in presenting to the new American administration our elements contributing to regional security, regional stability,” he said.
Maior also stated that he had a discussion in an informal setting with the new Security Advisor of President Donald Trump, General Michael T. Flynn, who knows Romania very well and who promised to visit the region and Romania very soon.
“It’s a first contact made at strategic level, which indicates the way in which this strategic dialogue with the US will take place. I also discussed with the Foreign Affairs Minister Theodor Melescanu about certain projects for visits we intend to conduct here to make contact with cabinet members, especially in the realm of commerce, economy and defence. But first and foremost a dialogue between President Klaus Iohannis and President Trump,” the Romanian ambassador also said.
He also stated that in regards to intelligence services, Romania is third or fourth in what regards cooperation with the US at an international level. “It’s an evaluation of American agencies, it’s not our evaluation,” Maior emphasized.
