* The 2017 running season starts with the Gerar Half Marathon, at its seventh edition;
* Over 800 runners will line up on Saturday, January 28th, at dusk;
* Gerar is the only road running event in which a team of three runs a semi marathon.
Over 800 participants are expected to run on Saturday, January 28th, in the Campus of the Bucharest Polytechnic University, the traditional venue for this race. Unlike the other editions, this year’s start time for the two trials will be set at 16:00 and 17:45 for the half marathon in teams (21 km) and at 19:30 for the individual cross (10.8 km). Telekom Romania supports the Gerar Half Marathon for the 4th consecutive year, a competition that is promoting the outdoor running, even at low temperatures, under extreme conditions.
The half marathon trials address the teams formed of three runners (three men for the male ranking – the first starting grid, two women and a man/two men and a woman for the mixed ranking, or three women for the female ranking – the second starting grid).
As both organizers and promoters are concerned about the environment protection as well, an eco-friendly strategy has been adopted in order to decrease the amount of waste, especially paper: electronic registration, reusable packaging for the participation kit and decrease of the use of paper based products within the contest sportexpo area.
“The Gerar Half Marathon is a soul competition, with wonderful people who manage to overcome their limitations and performances in extreme conditions. We are happy to notice the ever increasing interest for running, even at -10 Celsius degrees. This demonstrates that more and more people are interested in sport and in a healthy lifestyle”, said Gabriel Solomon, president of People for Sport Romania.
“I am delighted that the running fans will have a competition that challenges them this year as well, especially since the difficulty level has increased, as the race will be taking place in the evening. Gerar is more than a story of individual performance in extreme conditions, it is a moment of joy of living a healthy and active life, of nurturing the good and promoting the community values”, stated Ruxandra Voda, Communications Director of Telekom Romania.
The Gerar Half Marathon is organized by the Club Sportiv Ro, Club Maraton and People for Sport Romania associations, along with The Electric Engineering University within the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, in partnership with The Polytechnic University of Bucharest and The Bucharest Running Club Association.
The Ro Club Marathon is the first club for amateur marathoners in Romania. It was funded in the spring of 2008 by a group of runners from Bucharest and other cities, as a non-profit organization. The main objective is to promote long-distance running as a mass sport.
The main condition for acceptance in the club is the passion for running and the willingness to contribute in promoting running in Romania.
