Nicusor Dan on a possible candidacy of Ciolos for the USR leadership: Any competition is beneficial

President of the Save Romania Union (USR), Nicusor Dan, stated on Wednesday that any competition inside a party is beneficial, thus referring to a possible candidacy of the former PM Dacian Ciolos for the USR leadership.

“According to the statute, anyone can run for any position, this is the democracy we assume. (…) Obviously, any competition inside a party is beneficial” stated Nicusor Dan in a press conference held at the Parliament.

On the other hand, USR’s spokesman Dan Barna mentioned there was a phone conversation between Dacian Ciolos and Nicusor Dan, and today “the discussions are open on all the aspects”.

“A text message has been sent to Mr. Dacian Ciolos and his staff. Mr. Ciolos answered. There was a phone conversation between Mr. Dacian Ciolos and Mr. Nicusor Dan, being agreed that in the following period, Mr. Ciolos’s staff will discuss with our six representatives on which would be the best framework by which he could get closer to USR, either as a party member, or only for a cooperation from outside the party. This is the stage right now. Mr. Ciolos has received our invitation, we will continue our discussion at the staff level to identify the issues to be clarified” Barna stated.

He added that if Ciolos would join USR, “he will not come individually”.

“Dacian Ciolos has a staff formed by competent and valuable people whom you know since the government performed last year, and this integration of two significant political forces, as we appreciate them, on this side of the public stage, is not made by an overnight talk. It is a discussion that will last, it’s a medium-term plan, I’d say, at least. (…) We’re trying to identify the best and most consistent ways to cooperate exactly to be able to increase USR’s public importance, from our point of view, of course” added the USR’s spokesman.
