ForMin Melescanu welcomes the pro tempore president of US Senate Hatch

Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu met with the President pro tempore of the US Senate, Orrin Hatch, a context in which the Romanian dignitary appreciated the support of the American official for the development of bilateral strategic partnership and assured him of our country’s constant commitment, as a reliable ally of the United States.

“In this context, the Minister highlighted Romania’s decision to increase the defence budget to 2 percent of the GDP, and to modernize the armed forces’ capabilities. He also highlighted our country’s efforts in the combating terrorism respect and within the Global Anti-Daesh Coalition,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE)  specifies in a press release on Friday.

In turn, the press release reads, Senator Hatch welcomed Romania’s substantial contribution to the Euro-Atlantic security and assured the Romanian side of his friendship and support in the US Congress.

The two officials also exchanged views in a meeting on Thursday, regarding the strategic situation in the Black Sea region, as well as the prospects of the US presence in the area, MAE further mentions.


Melescanu, US House of Representatives members hold talks


Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu met on Thursday with Republican congressmen Ed Royce – Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mike Rogers – President of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces of the Committee on Armed Services and Jackie Walorski – Member of the Ways and Means Committee and founding member of the Friendship for Romania Group in the US Congress.

According to a press release remitted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE)  on Friday, during the meeting with Ed Royce, the head of the Romanian diplomacy highlighted the importance of the political-military and economic dimensions of the strategic partnership between Romania and the US, and the interest in increasing US investment in our country.

“Congressman Royce stressed that he upholds the strong response of the United States towards the security challenges east of NATO, and the need for a better US coordination with allies, including Romania, on this topic. The congressman showed that he encourages an interaction as dynamic as possible between the US and the Romanian companies, pointing out in this context the importance of ensuring a predictable legal framework to encourage investment and of developing and diversifying bilateral economic relations,” specifies the Foreign Ministry.

The quoted source also mentions that Mike Rogers, chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Force praised Romania’s efforts on the line of the defence budget growth, and in the operational theaters alongside the US forces.

“During the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of Congressman Mike Rogers’s approach to bring to Romania, in the next period, a delegation made up of newly elected House of Representatives members to visit the Aegis Ashore facility from the Deveselu military base, a strategic bilateral and transatlantic project,” reads the release.

In his meeting with Jackie Walorski, informs MAE, Minister Teodor Melescanu has particularly appreciated the special attention and support given by the US official to the demarches of strengthening the bilateral relationship and promoting a robust US engagement in Romania. Jackie Walorski emphasised the importance for the US of the strategic partnership relation with Romania and expressed assurances regarding the US Congress’s support for strengthening the transatlantic relation, specifies the Foreign Ministry press release.
