Dragnea on Ponta’s exclusion from PSD: This isn’t PSD’s problem now

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea stated that from his point of view Victor Ponta’s exclusion from the party, that was discussed in the meeting of the National Executive Committee (CExN) doesn’t represent a main issue in this period.

When asked, in a press conference, why he didn’t agree with Ponta’s exclusion from the PSD, Dragnea said: “Because I’m consistent. […] I said it from the start that I don’t intend to request him this thing, I also ripped that intention of resignation, and I also told my colleagues that I don’t believe that this is our problem now. I assume to be cursed or insulted. We don’t want to introduce this problem in the party’s debate.”

He revealed that in the case of Valeriu Zgonea he had the same position.

“In Valeriu Zgonea’s case I also had the same position. Only I didn’t impose my authority. At that time, I left the hall, leaving the colleagues and asking them not to get to exclusion because I hardly support or initiate the exclusion of a party member, regardless of who that person is,” the PSD leader mentioned.

According to him, Mircea Geoana’s exclusion, as well as Marian Vanghelie’s was a mistake.

“I stated some time ago that the exclusion of Mircea Geoana was a mistake. Marian Vanghelie’s exclusion was also a mistake. When a member of the party is excluded, we lose a colleague. One must do too serious things [to be excluded – e.n.],” he claimed.

The exclusion of Victor Ponta from the PSD was requested on Thursday at the meeting of the party’s CExN, by the PSD Constanta leader Felix Stroe, leader of the PSD Alba Ioan Darzu, leader of PSD Olt Paul Stanescu, but also by leader of the PSD senators Serban Nicolae, according to some political sources. Liviu Dragnea didn’t agree, claiming that tensions will be created which right now have no point, giving that other serious problems in the PSD are debated, such as the governance programme or the uniform public pay law.
