Freight train derails near Petrosani, two engineers killed. Railway authority to investigate case

A freight train owned by a private operator derailed Saturday afternoon on a viaduct near Banita-Merisor – Hunedoara County, some 14 km northwest of Petrosani. According to spokesman of the Hunedoara Police County Inspectorate Bogdan Nitu, the 16-carriage train was headed for Petrosani-Subcetate, and upon approaching the viaduct 14 carriages and the engine went off tracks; six carriages and the engine landed in the ravine, in a hard-to-reach area, Nitu explained.

The two engineers, aged 51 and 67, respectively, were killed. Rail traffic near Petrosani was redirected on a bypassing route. Initial investigations pointed to the failure of the braking system as the cause of the accident, as the two engineers had announced through the radio station it had malfunctioned and requested the tracks ahead to be cleared, as they attempted to slow down the train.

The Railway Investigation Agency will probe the accident, CFR SA announced, adding that “it was taking action with pantograph railcars to restore the overhead line, and that when investigation allows it, two crane trains will be deployed to the scene from Craiova and Simeria to remove the derailed carriages.
