INS: Romania has 36pct paved, gravel public roads, only 4.2 pct motorways in 2016

Romania had last year 86,080 kilometers of public roads, of which more than 36 pct and 31,084 kilometers respectively, were cobbled and gravel roads, while the length of the motorways was only 747 kilometers (4.2 pct), just as in 2015, according to data released on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the source, the length of the upgraded roads increased by 4 pct in 2016 as compared to 2015.

Regarding the technical condition of public roads, 41.7 pct of the length of the upgraded roads and 50.5 pct of the lengths of the roads with light road pavement had an overdue service life.

The county roads were 38.6% of roads with light road pavement and 42.2 pct of the communal roads were cobbled roads.

On 31 December 2016, the railways of public use in operation amounted to 10,774 km, of which 10,635 km (98.7 pct) normal track gauge and 134 km (1.2 pct) large gauge lines. The electrified railway lines in operation accounted for 37.4 pct of the railway network in operation. The density of railways per 1000 sqkm territory was 45.2 ?. At the same time, the simple length of the electrified railway tracks in operation was 4,030 km, representing 37.4 pct of the railway network in operation.
