Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu will attend on Friday the informal (Gymnich) meeting of diplomacies’ chiefs of the European Union (EU) member states, that will take place in Valletta, a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) informs.
According to the quoted source, the discussions within the meeting will focus on topical issues, such as the recent developments in Turkey, globalization and challenges to the international law order. Moreover, an assessment will be carried out with Foreign Ministers of the candidate states regarding the stage of implementing the EU’s Global Strategy.
Chair of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister will also attend the meeting as guest.
The informal Gymnich meetings of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs are held twice a year by the stated which holds the rotative Presidency of the Council of the EU. The name comes from the Gymnich Castle in Germany, where this type of meeting took place for the first time in 1974. This meeting aims at facilitating a free exchange of opinions regarding topical issues on the agenda of European foreign affairs.
The debates are not finalized with operational decisions, nor with the adoption of conclusions. Furthermore, the Gymnich meetings represent the starting point for debating the topics that are to feature on the agenda of formal meetings of the respective semester – the Foreign Affairs Council, European Council meetings.
