The B-boy Musical MARIONETTE is a work of art between two different genres, namely B-boying and Puppet Show. Though these art forms have very different features and emotional foundation, they are being reborn into a B-boy musical through the delicate hands and body movements of the worldwide B-boy group, Expression Crew.

Expression Crew is famous for being the first Korean group to win the International Battle of the Year in 2002, placing thus South Korea on the map in the B-boy world. They have taken their international status after Battle of the Year 2002 and turned their talents to theatrical performances. Their most famous performance is “Marionette”, created in 2005, which they have showcased around the world. The main story of Marionette is about a puppet that falls in love with a little girl who comes to see his show over time. She grows older and he yearns to express his love for her, but when she grows older, she stops coming to the show. A number of scenes featuring meeting and parting, love and dreams, conflicts and forgiveness, and frustration and challenges are tense yet well harmonized with lyrical dancing and dreamy music.

Mr. Woo Sung Lee, leader of Expression Crew, who worked for K-pop groups such as BIGBANG, Jay Park, Seo Tai-ji, Seven (YG and JYP Entertainment), as both trainer and choreographer, and with a B-boy career spanning for over 20 years, put all his hope and creativity into this work. It shows his curiosity in childhood, conflict, adversity and pains obtained from his dance life.

B-boying and street dancing performed on a theatrical stage is an important sign for cultural evolution, as it forces mainstream audiences to see how these different styles can work in a cohesive performance. Expression Crew has done all of this with “Marionette”.
