PNL files constitutional review challenge against statute amendment that makes appearance before committees of inquiry mandatory

On Monday, the National Liberal Party (PNL) lodged with the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) a constitutionality review challenge against the amendment brought to the statute of lawmakers, amendment according to which any person summoned before a parliamentary committee of inquiry is obligated to show up.

“PNL has filed today the constitutional challenge against the modification of the statute of lawmakers. Most likely, tomorrow we will also file the other two notifications regarding the amending of the Lower Chamber’s Regulations and the amending of the Joint Regulations. Concerning the amending of the statute of lawmakers, we had constitutional challenge deadlines. Regarding the Regulations, basically we don’t have the pressure of time, so we started gradually in order for these amendments to be made thoroughly,” Raluca Turcan stated at the end of PNL’s Political Bureau meeting.

In what concerns PSD’s accusation that PNL is seeking to defend DNA Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi with this move, Turcan said that at this moment the Social Democrats are doing anything to distract from the disastrous economic situation.

“Those from PSD, the poor fellows, are doing anything at this moment because the economy is going straight down the drain because they are unable to handle the expenditures they have undertaken and, basically, the large projects under the PSD brand, rightfully awaited by the citizens, are registering a delay. So, their great achievement was a messy economy and postponed social projects, possibly transferred in the arms of the future Government. So, they should tone it down with the conspiracy theory. Lately it has been proven that PNL reacted firmly, constructively and on substance,” Turcan explained.
