Tonight (19.15 LT), at Cannes, there will be held the opening ceremony of the 70th edition of the most important international film festival, taking place between May 17 and 28, this year. A French film directed by Arnaud Depleschin, Les Fantoms d`Ismael (Ismael Ghosts), the story of a couple crisis, was chosen for the opening. A man, Ismael I (Mathieu Amalric) tells the memories full of the images of the two women in his life, Carlotta (Marion Cotillard) and Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg). We mention that the movie is screened outside the competition.
The jury granting Palme d`Or is formed by the Chairman Pedro Almodovar, as well as by the German director Maren Ade, the American actress Jessica Chastian, the Chinese actress and producer Fan Bingbing, the French actress and producer Agnes Jaoui, the South-Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, the American actor and musician Will Smith, the Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino and the French composer Gabriel Yared. The adjacent juries’ composition was also announced few days ago. For un Certain Regard (Chairman – Uma Thurman), there is an Egyptian director, a French actress, accompanied by the Belgian director Joachim Laffosse and the Artistic Director of the Karlovy Vary festival, Karel Och. Sandrine Kiberlain was appointed in the head of the conclave which will grant Camera d`Or, a jury with a French composition, from which I will mention only the actress Elodie Bouchez. The awards for Cinéfondation and for short movies will be granted by the jury led by Cristian Mungiu, accompanied by four filmmakers from France, USA, Singapore and Greece.
The screenings in almost all the sections will start tomorrow. In the Palme d`Or competition, two movies can be seen: Wonderstruck (at 8.00 and 16.00). Directed by Todd Haynes, the movie brings on the screen the story of two kids, Iben, a boy who never met his father, and Rose, a deaf little girl who is passionate about the biography of a celebrity, Julianne Moore. We remind that the director was twice in the Cannes competition before, with “Carol” (2015) and “Velvet Goldmine” (1998). The second movie of the evening is Nelyubov (Lovelessi). The Russian movie is signed by Andrei Zviagintev, the author of the well-known “Leviathan”, entered in competition in 2014. This time, we assist at the story of a couple, Boris and Zvhenia. Being ready to divorce, each of them being involved in a different relationship, they suddenly have to face a dramatic situation: their son, Aliosa (12 years old) is gone.
Being present with several movies, both as a director and actor, Mathieu Amarlic opens the competition for Un Certain Regard with Barbara. An actress (Jeanne Balibar) has to interpret Barbara, and she is hardly studying for this, just like the author of the movie, interpreted by Mathieu Amarlic.
The movie which will open the Hors Competition section, tomorrow, May 18, at 19.15, also seems to be interesting. A great actress, Vanessa Redgrave, makes her debut as a director, also playing a leading role in this movie. Sea Sorrow presents the bitter fate of the emigrants, those who suffered, yesterday and today, because of the conflicts, the tragedy of leaving their homes, running and seeking their peace.
The following days are also full of events. They are meant to complete the competition ensemble of the festival, adding new pages in the rich history of the seven decades.
