Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service: More than 700 code red and code yellow emergencies due to excessive heat

In the last 24 hours, the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service (SABIf) registered more than 700 calls for serious cases, code red and code yellow emergencies; the intervention of the medical crews in public spaces was necessary for almost 200 of them. There were also 90 fainting cases, with or without the loss of consciousness, due to excessive heat, the SABIF manager, Dr. Alis Grasu stated on Sunday for News.ro.

According to the physician, 1,284 calls were registered in the last 24 hours at the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service, 755 of them being code red and code yellow emergencies.

For 190 emergencies, the doctors had to intervene in public spaces.

Also, 90 of the cases for which the intervention in public spaces was necessary, were cases of fainting, with or without the loss of consciousness.

The doctor recommends to the people in Bucharest to avoid walking in the sun at midday, to dress appropriately, to drink many liquids and to avoid alcohol and coffee in these hot days.

Approx. 190 people received medical care from the SMURD crews, while 90 people were transported to hospitals in the last two days, because of the heat. Firefighters also intervened to extinguish the vegetation fires in 26 counties, the Ministry of Interior (MAI) announced on Sunday.

Over 1,100 employees of the Interior Ministry worked over the last two days during the heat period, all over the country.

The SMURD crews provided medical care to 186 people, and 90 people were transported to the hospital, invoking medical problems due to high temperatures.

More than 840 first-aid points have been arranged all over the country, and the crews of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations transported 44,785 liters of water in the counties of Cluj, Gorj, Giurgiu, Hunedoara, Ialomita, Mehedinti, Neamt and Vrancea.

Firefighters also worked to extinguish vegetation fires in 26 counties. The fires occurred locally and they didn’t threat people or goods.

After Friday, when the heat was increasing on most of the country, on Saturday, from 10.00 to 21.00, nineteen counties and the Bucharest municipality were under code red warning of heat, the temperatures in these regions going to reach even 44 Celsius degrees.

Thus, extreme maximum temperatures comparable to the absolute records of the period, frequently reaching between 38 and 41 degrees, were registered in the counties of Dolj, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Calarasi, Ialomita, Galati, Braila, Vaslui and Iasi, as well as in Bucharest and in the low areas of the counties of Valcea, Srges, Dambovita, Prahova, Buzau, Vrancea, Bacau and Neamt. In the southern Oltenia and Muntenia, the temperatures increased to 42-44 degrees.
