Prosecutor General Augustin Lazar said on Tuesday that the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) is an elite institution of the Public Ministry, and the scandal is around the institution, not within it, being deliberately devised to favour those who want put an end to anti-corruption fight.
“It’s you who insinuate that there is a scandal inside DNA. The scandal surrounds DNA, that is, there is a jamming, a particularly media noise that is keen on finding the vulnerabilities of an elite institution of the Public Ministry, the vulnerabilities and possible radicalizations of certain people who surely might have accumulated some frustration over time, but I assure you that DNA is an elite structure of the Public Ministry where the EU has invested a lot of money (…) So the scandal is around it, it’s fabricated not disinterestedly, by certain media channels. It obviously benefits those who want to stop the anti-corruption fight,” Lazar told the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM).
According to him, DNA will clarify all the problems it has in the upcoming days.
“It [DNA – ed.n] has an elite body, like the entire Public Ministry, as a matter of fact, and DNA will straighten out all the problems it has in the next few days. The fact that someone commits an act in DNA does not mean tension. It means that person will be found, things will be clarified in the next days and it will be proved that the DNA is capable of settling its own problems, “Augustin Lazar specified.
With regard to the lie detector tests, he said that the device is not a “queen” of probation, but it can head the investigation into the right direction.
“The lie detector is not a “queen” of probation, but it can help the one carrying out the checks to determine from a wider pool of suspects were to the investigation should go. I am telling you for sure that the lie detector has often been used, not to produce the ‘queen’ of probation, but to direct the investigation,” Lazar explained.

Romania’s Prosecutor General Augustin Lazar stated on Tuesday, when referring to the control that is to be conducted by the Judicial Inspection, that he is not afraid of anything, because the Public Ministry is a powerful institution.
“The Justice Ministry has the right to request such verification. I am not afraid of anything, the Public Ministry is a powerful institution, (…) balanced, does its job in accordance with the law. (…) I haven’t received any official request,” Lazar stated at the Superior Council of Magistrates (CSM).
The Chief Inspector of the Judicial Inspection has signed the orders for conducting controls regarding the management efficiency at the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) and the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
