Romanian national baseball team defeated on Wednesday evening, 6-4, the team of the US troops stationed at the “Mihail Kogalniceanu” base in an exhibition game held in Bucharest Tei Students’ Complex during the Baseball Festival.
This was the teams’ second match, the first one having also been won by Romania, 7-2, in Constanta, this April.
Attending the event were Marlon Anderson, Scott Erickson and LaTroy Hawkins, three players who made history in the US Major League Baseball. Through his career, Scott Erickson pitched for American baseball emblematic club New York Yankees, also having been selected for All Star Game. LaTroy Hawkins has an impressive career, having played no less than 22 years in the US Major League Baseball. Marlon Anderson was a baseman player for the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers, other legendary teams of this sport. Only LaTroy Hawkins played alongside the the US servicemen selected team on Wednesday.
The Romanian selected team, led by coach Gabriel Adumitrachioaie, fielded players Eduard Parvu, Lucian Manole, Ciprian Fetcu, Sorin Serbanescu, Beniamin Parvu, Adrian Preda, Iulian Serban, Dan Panaitescu, Bogdan Parvu and Cristian Secareanu.
In the stands were US Ambassador Hans Klemm, Sharon Robinson, the daughter of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. Also attending the event were Minister of Youth and Sports Marius Dunca, Mayor of Constanta Municipality Decebal Fagadau, President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) Mihai Covaliu, Director General of the Municipal Sport Club (CSM) Gabriela Szabo, President of the Romanian Athletic Federation Florian Florea and former football player Erik Lincar.
Baseball Festival, the first event of this kind in Romania, is part of the Jackie Robinson Project, a Romanian-American initiative to promote sports values in Romania. The three US baseball stars, Marlon Anderson, Scott Erickson si LaTroy Hawkins are visiting our country for a few days, having already participated in Alexandria si Calarasi in events meant to disseminate the American sport amongst Romanian children. More than 100 children were initiated to baseball by the former players.
