Minister Pastirnac, Ambassador Giungi meet on situation of Romanians working in Italy

Minister for Romanians Abroad Andreea Pastirnac (photo) met on Monday Italian Ambassador to Romania Marco Giungi, with talks focusing on the situation of the Romanian community in the peninsula, the ministry in charge informed in a release.

According to the cited source, the talks focused on the working conditions of the Romanians who reside in Italy, the two states’ approach to undocumented work, as well as the possibilities of cooperation regarding social cases.

The minister highlighted the importance the Bucharest authorities attach to bilateral cooperation on the prevention of the risks faced by the Romanians who seek a job abroad. In this context, Andreea Pastirnac said that the Romanian side will launch a pilot campaign for the correct and operative information of the Romanian citizens on the rights they have in the countries where they want to work, study and live, the protection against abuse and labor exploitation or any other sort of abuse, the cited source said.

Ambassador Marco Giungi highlighted the measures set in force by Italy for the combat of labor exploitation, namely the implementation of the “law against job fixers (caporali)”, assuring the Romanian side of the readiness of the Italian authorities to continue and intensify negotiations on this subject, at intergovernmental level as well.

The two officials agreed that the only way to sort out this situation in the short term is by cooperation between the two governments, with the participation of the ministries and agencies with relevant responsibilities in social and employment policies.
