Official statistics: June’s unemployment rate dips to 5.3 pct, jobless number at 470,000

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.3 pct at the end of June 2017, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month (5.4 pct), and the number of unemployed as per ILO unemployment standards reached 470,000, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said on Monday.

The number of unemployed (aged 15 to 74) estimated for June 2017 was 470,000, down from the 478,000 jobless registered in the month before, and also down from the 527,000 persons registered in the same month of 2016.

By gender, at 5.9 percent, the male unemployment rate was 1.5 percentage points higher than the female unemployment rate (4.4 percent), reads the release.

For adults aged 25 to 74, the estimated unemployment rate was 4.2 percent (4.8 for men and 3.3 percent for women); 74.0 percent of the total estimated number of unemployed this June fall in this age bracket.
