President Klaus Iohannis will attend on Saturday the opening of the 27th annual Transylvanian Saxons Meeting which will take place in Sibiu, and on Sunday the 100-year remembrance ceremony for the battle of Marasesti, the Presidential Administration said in a release.
The Sibiu-based event running under the logo “Worldwide at home, heart in Transylvania” organized by the Democratic Forum of Romania’s Germans and the Association of Saxon Communities in Germany, will bring together representatives of this ethnic community in Romania and other countries such as Germany, Austria, the US.
“President Klaus Iohannis considers that the meeting this year provides, particularly the young generation of Germany-based Saxons, the opportunity to know better and embrace Romania, their parents’ country of origin,” the release said.
On Sunday the head of the state will attend the remembrance ceremony marking 100 years since the Marasesti battle.
“One century after the most important military operation of the Romanian Armed Forces in World War I, President Klaus Iohannis honors at Marasesti the memory of those who fought and laid down their life for a united and powerful Romania,” the Presidential Administration said.
On this occasion, President Iohannis will decorate the war flags of the military units that followed into the fighting traditions of 100 years ago, will address the attendance made of representatives of the public authorities, the diplomatic corps and denominations, and will present the Marasesti Mausoleum with a commemorative flag.
