ANM: Code Yellow, Code Orange for heatwave in western country counties, Wednesday, Thursday

The National Weather Administration (ANM) on Tuesday, issued Code Yellow and Code Orange advisories for excessive heat, valid on August 9 and 10 in the western half of the country.

According to meteorologists, on Wednesday, August 9, a Code Yellow advisory for excessive heat will be valid for nine counties in the west, northwest and southwest of the territory. Thus, the heat wave will expand to the western half of the territory, and in Banat, Crisana, southwest Transylvania and Oltenia, weather conditions will stay scorchy and the thermal discomfort will be highly accentuated.

The counties under Code Yellow warning are as follows: Satu Mare, Bihor, Arad, Alba, Hunedoara, Timis, Caras-Severin, Mehedinti and Dolj. In these areas, the temperature-humidity index (THI) will reach the critical threshold of 80 units on rather extended areas, and it will locally exceed it. The maximum temperatures will generally range between 35 and 37 degrees, and isolated, in the Western Plain, they will reach 38 degrees, and the minimum temperatures will not go down below 20 degrees.

Also, according to the ANM, on Thursday, August 10, a Code Orange for excessive heat and thermal discomfort warning will be valid in Dolj, Mehedinti, Caras-Severin, Timis, Arad and Bihor counties. In the western lowland parts and locally, in the centre and the south, the weather will be extremely hot and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will reach and exceed the 80-unit mark. The minimum temperatures at night will not generally decline below 20 degrees, and in the West Hills they will range between 24 to 25 degrees.

In the counties under advisory, the thermal discomfort will be accentuated and maximum temperatures ranging 37 and 39 degrees will be recorded.

Also on August 10, 13 counties in the western half of the country will be under Code Yellow for excessive heat. In Maramures, northern Crisana, most of Transylvania, northern and eastern Oltenia and in the southwest of Muntenia, the thermal discomfort will be high and the thermal peaks will generally vary between 35 and 37 degrees.

ANM notifies that the heatwave will persist until the end of the week, and in the mountain areas, especially in the northwest of the territory, on restricted areas during the afternoons, there will be manifestations of atmospheric instability.
