Canadian Hornets to patrol skies over Romania under NATO command

Enhanced air policing missions under NATO command will be conducted in the Romanian skies over the next four months using Canadian Hornet and MiG-21 LanceRs aircraft.

“Four Canadian Air Force CF-188 Hornets arrived on Sunday at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, where they will participate in the execution of air policing missions under NATO command, taking over responsibilities from the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. The Canadian Air Task Force Romania consists of approximately 135 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel (pilots and technical personnel) and CF-188 Hornet aircraft and it will carry out air policing missions alongside MiG-21 LanceRs and Romanian Air Force personnel over the next four months,” according to a press statement released on Wednesday by the National Defence Ministry (MApN).

The joint missions will contribute to the development of the reaction and deterrence capacity, as well as to the enhancement of interoperability between the Romanian and Canadian air forces.

NATO Air Policing is a peacetime mission which aims to preserve the security of Alliance airspace.

The Canadian Armed Forces take part in the mission on a rotational basis. This mission is part of Operation REASSURANCE, which involves military actions conducted by the Canadian Air Forces, as of 2014, and represents Canada’s contribution to NATO assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe.

The CAF first deployed an ATF to Romania as part of Operation REASSURANCE from April to August 2014 at the 71st “General Emanoil Ionescu” Air Base in Campia Turzii. During this mission, the ATF was engaged in multinational training opportunities that developed interoperability in the areas of air defence, air superiority, and tactical support missions.
