TAP Portugal puts again dozens of Romanian passengers in difficult situations by cancelling two flights

A few dozens of Romanian tourists were blocked again for several hours on the Lisbon Airport starting from Wednesday evening, after the flight that was supposed to bring them in Bucharest was cancelled. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Thursday morning that it is aware of this case and part of the Romanian citizens will leave with “other alternative flights”. Also, other more than 250 people who were going to fly from Bucharest to Lisbon on Thursday morning found out at the airport that the flight was cancelled.

The Lisbon-Bucharest flight belonging to TAP Portugal had to take off from the Portugal’s capital city on Wednesday evening, around midnight, but the tourists were told that the flight will be delayed. Later, they found out that the flight was cancelled, without receiving any explanation on the reasons of this situation.

“There are families with young children, we haven’t receive any explanation, they only said that they don’t have flights for Romania. They didn’t provide us with accommodation or anything over the night” stated for Antena 3 one of the passengers who spent their night in the Lisbon airport.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) informed that Romania’s Embassy to the Portuguese Republic was closely following the situation of Romanian citizens on the Lisbon airport, whose flight got canceled.

“A consular team of the Romanian Embassy in Lisbon went last night to the airport in order to talk to representatives of the airline and also with the Romanian citizens”, a release of MAE sent on Thursday informs.

According to the release, it appearsedthat some of the Romanian citizens were to leave with other alternative flights.

Representatives of the airline announced that they were making demarches to organise another flight Thursday  morning for the Romanian citizens who took off with other alternative flights.

“The diplomatic mission’s mobile team remains on the Lisbon airport until all Romanian citizens will be boarded to Romania,” the MAE release also mentioned.

“The Romanian diplomatic mission is monitoring the case and maintains permanent contact with the airline and the Romanian citizens, granting the necessary consular assistance”.

Also, the TAP Portugal flight that was supposed to fly from Bucharest to Lisbon on Thursday morning was cancelled.

According to a press release sent by the company Aeroporturi Bucuresti, TAP Portugal airline cancelled the flight TAP 1324/1325 Lisbon-Bucharest-Lisbon, and the 254 passengers that were supposed to leave from the Bucharest ‘Henri Coanda’ International Airport to Lisbon at 7.00 o’clock, are assisted by the handling agent that serves the airline and by the airport’s staff.

“At the same time, the airport staff does everything to minimize the discomfort caused by cancelling this flight. The National Company Aeroporturi Bucuresti ensures passengers that they will benefit from all the support needed for the safe and secure performance of all the air operations” the company also says.

A similar incident occurred at the end of August, when more than 100 Romanian tourists were blocked for two days in Lisbon, after the Portuguese airline TAP Portugal cancelled its flights. PM Mihai Tudose announced at that time that he will recall Alina-Oana Dociu from her position as a consul in Lisbon, due the manner of managing this situation.


TAP Portugal: We will take all the measures not to have this kind of situations again


In a press release sent on Thursday, TAP Portugal announced that an alternative flight will leave at 13.00 from Lisbon to Bucharest with the remaining passengers in Portugal.

“TAP Portugal apologizes for the inconvenience caused to all the passengers by cancelling the two flights – Lisbon-Bucharest and return. Yesterday, at 00.15, due to a technical deficiency, the flight from Lisbon to Bucharest was cancelled. This decision has been taken for the safety of more than 100 passengers. The aircraft that was supposed to arrive in Bucharest, was going to return to Portugal today, with other passengers” reads the press release.

“Our priority was rerouting everybody, and it was carried out in difficult situations, since we are in the middle of the season, and the occupation level of the flights is almost the highest possible” also stated the TAP representatives. “We will take all the possible measures not to have this kind of situations again”.


MAE: Romanians stuck on Lisbon airport to be flown to Romania with a special flight


The Romanian citizens blocked on the Lisbon airport will be flown to Romania with a special flight that is leaving Portugal at 13:00hrs, local time, a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) informed on Thursday.

“Following the demarches of the diplomatic mission near the TAP airline company, as well as the permanent contact with the relevant Portuguese authorities, it was confirmed that TAP airline and the Portuguese Infrastructure and Planning Ministry are organising a special flight towards Bucharest, departing at 13:00 hrs (local time), which is to carry the passengers of the canceled flight to Romania,” the MAE mentioned.

Moreover, the MAE mentions that a mobile consular team of Romania’s Embassy in Lisbon went to the airport, maintaining permanent contact with the airline responsible for the situation, as well as with the Romanian citizens and the National Association of Travel Agencies (ANAT). Furthermore, representatives of the diplomatic mission made sure that Romanian citizens were provided with food.

The MAE reveals that, out of the 175 passengers of the canceled flight, 16 already left for Romania with other flights, the rest of them are to board the special flight made available by the TAP Portugal company.
