President Iohannis sends congratulations message to German Chancellor Angela Merkel

President Klaus Iohannis on Monday sent a congratulations message to Chancellor Angela Merkel, following the result of the legislative elections on Sunday in the Federal Republic of Germany, according to a Presidential Administration release.

“Your winning the federal parliamentary elections gives me the occasion to address the most sincere congratulations, together with wishes of success in your new chancellor mandate. The relation between Romania and Germany is an excellent one, of a strategic nature, an aspect also fully confirmed through the intensity of the political dialogue, the economic and sectoral cooperation and the interhuman relations, as well as through sharing the same fundamental democratic values. Romania represents, at the same time, a stable and trustworthy partner for Germany, a promoter of consolidating the European project,” President Klaus Iohannis’ message reads.

The head of state underscored that the year 2017 holds a special significance through the 50th anniversary since the establishment of Romanian-German diplomatic relations and 25th anniversary since the signing of the Treaty on friendly cooperation and partnership in Europe. Moreover, Iohannis mentioned that the meeting with Merkel in June this year, in Berlin, confirmed the solidity of the bilateral partnership and provided the prospects for a close cooperation on a European level, including in terms of the discussions with the future of Europe, as well as in the perspective of Romania’s exerting the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first semester of 2019.

The release shows that President Iohannis voiced conviction that the two countries will be able to continue the “excellent” collaboration, to the benefit of the Romanian and German peoples, as well as for the future of Europe.
