Congratulatory message of Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on German Unity Day: Romania is proud of its firm alliance with Germany

On the distinguished occasion of the German Unity Day, we convey our best wishes and cordial congratulations to the people of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The National Day of Germany is a reminder of the outstanding and enduring successes people can achieve when they come together to fulfil their sovereign aspirations. German democracy stands on monumental examples of unity, solidarity and continuity, which make it a model in Europe and in the rest of the world. On this special day, we therefore remember the inspirational efforts of the German people to live united in a free state.

Romania is proud of its firm alliance with Germany. Our economic exchanges have grown steadily, Germany being Romania’s top trading partner. Moreover, this year we marked 25 years since the signing of the Treaty on Friendly Cooperation, which laid the foundation of our present excellent relations. The official visits to Berlin at presidential and ministerial levels this summer reinforced the pragmatic understanding of this anniversary and gave momentum to our ongoing dialogue. Our dynamic political and diplomatic contacts mirror the countless people-to-people connections that have developed in recent decades and positively shaped our societies.

The strength of our relationship derives from the realities of the present as well as from our shared past. The old cities of Sibiu (Hermannstadt), Brașov (Kronstadt), Sighișoara (Schäßburg), the Peleș Castle in the Carpathian Mountains, and the picturesque Saxon villages in Transylvania bear testimony to the tremendous significance of the German heritage in the Romanian national culture. The German community in Romania has contributed to our way of life throughout the centuries, and continues to do so today. The Romanian-German Governmental Committee for the German ethnics living in Romania, which this year in Bucharest convened for the 20th time since its establishment in 1992, is yet another expression of our fruitful collaboration.

Looking ahead to the Centennial that Romania will celebrate next year, we cannot help but see that the pursuit of unity is a historic endeavour that defines both our countries profoundly. This ancient longing for unity drives the present German and Romanian resolve for a united Europe.

Our two countries share an unwavering ambition to make a success out of the European Union. This is particularly meaningful for Romania now as we celebrate our first ten years inside this unparalleled project of peace and prosperity, and prepare for our coming Presidency of the EU Council in 2019. At a time when the EU faces so many internal and external challenges, it is essential to stress the popular support that European integration enjoys among Germans and Romanians alike. To be feasible, any future scenario on the improvement of the EU and its institutions must be grounded in wide and sound democratic legitimacy. In this sense, Romania and Germany have much to offer to the debate.

Being confident that our strong alliance will deliver this result and more, we once again convey to the German people our warmest wishes of well-being on their National Day.

Schönen Nationalfeiertag!
