Congratulatory message of Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The Republic of Korea is a close friend of Romania, a fact eloquently illustrated by our bilateral relations being upgraded to the level of Strategic Partnership

On the auspicious occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Korea, it gives us great pleasure to extend to the Korean people our most heartfelt congratulations, along with our best wishes of peace, prosperity and great achievements.

The Republic of Korea is a close friend of Romania, a fact eloquently illustrated by our bilateral relations being upgraded to the level of Strategic Partnership since 2008. Symbolically, the Republic of Korea remains to date the only country in Asia with which Romania has established such a Partnership. Moreover, the Program of the Romanian Government includes the consolidation of the Romanian-Korean Strategic Partnership as a distinct foreign policy priority.

On this solid foundation, our bilateral ties have continued to expand drawing from the clear like-mindedness of the two countries in terms of democratic values, a genuine complementarity in the economic field and the convergence of views on major issues and challenges featuring the world nowadays.

We are glad to recall, at this time, the very fruitful visit to Bucharest of the Minister of Foreign affairs, Yun Byung-se, in February 2017, which emphasized once again the relevant potential for expanding the Romanian-Korean bonds in various areas, as well as the strong joint political commitment to pursue this goal.

From an economic perspective, our relationship has known steadily positive dynamics, favored by both countries’ solid economic growth and stability over the last five years, as well as by their unequivocal common interests in promoting the international free trade and economic cooperation.

Our cultural and educational exchanges have been an important element in our efforts to bring our people closer together. The constant interest shown by the Korean students in learning the Romanian language and studying Romanian culture at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies proves that, despite the considerable geographical distance between our countries, people-to-people contacts are possible.

We also value our very good cooperation in the frame of international fora, particularly in the United Nations system and in the frame of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). We seize this opportunity to convey our appreciation for the favorable position expressed by the Republic of Korea concerning Romania’s candidature for accession to OECD.

The celebration of the National Day of the Republic of Korea takes place this year in a very complicated and tensed regional and international context. The recent developments in the Korean Peninsula have created an increasingly worrying security situation of great concern for the whole world. They have led to direct threats to the Korean people generated by a political regime that acts irrespective of all the international regulations. We have every confidence that the Republic of Korea and the international community will find a way to navigate with wisdom through this troubled period and will reach the best solution to one of the most intricate international problems of our times. We take this opportunity to reiterate Romania’s commitment to stand firmly alongside the Republic of Korea and the other relevant global actors in the endeavors aimed at peacefully addressing the serious challenges in the Peninsula.

Once again, we would like to convey warm congratulations and best wishes to the Korean government and people on the National Day of the Republic of Korea!
