Frankfurt Book Fair: A debate on the export of the Romanian literature, moderated by the translator Ernest Wichner

The debate entitled “Is there an export market for the Romanian literature?”, moderated by Ernest Wichner, one of the most important Romanian language translators in the German space, was held on Saturday at the Romania’s stand at the Frankfurt International Book Fair.

The round table aimed to present the four Romanian language anthologies to be published in German language until the Leipzig Book Fair which will be held in 2018, when Romania will be the Guest of Honor. These are two prose anthologies and two poetry anthologies, to be published by the Die Horen magazine, Transit Verlag, Pop Verlag and Sprache im Technischen Zeitalter magazine. The selection of the prose writers was made by Bogdan-Alexandru Stanescu (Die Horen), Anke Pfeiffer and Daniela Duca (Transit Verlag), while the selection of the poetry authors was made by Traian Pop (Pop Verlag) and Radu Vancu (Sprache im Technischen Zeitalter).

“Next year, in March, when Romania will be the Guest of Honor of the Leipzig Book Fair, the Minister of Culture and National Identity will have the opportunity to promote, in a large program of events, all these Romanian titles to be published by some of the most important publishing houses in the German language space. We are honored to be able to return, in 2018, after exactly 20 years, in the spotlight of Leipzig. While the spread of the Romanian literature in the international space was very shy in 1998, we assure you that in 2018 you will see a real boom of the Romanian authors on the German book market – representative authors, high-quality translations and top German publishing houses” stated Lucian Romașcanu, the Minister of Culture and National Identity.

The publication of these anthologies is a real moment of spread of the contemporary Romanian literature to the German language space, a moment that will be celebrated next year by a vast program gathering dozens of events: book launches, meetings with authors, film screenings, debates, round tables, exhibitions.

The four titles benefit from the support of the National Book Center within the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Romania’s stand will also host book launches and round tables organized by the Ministry of Culture and national Identity, as well as by the Vremea and Pop Verlag publishing houses, which will be attended by the writers Doina Ruști, Emil Hurezeanu, Denisa Comanescu, Jan Cornelius and Liane Focșa.
