Senate’s Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu and the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber Liviu Dragnea filed in Parliament the legislative initiative for regulating the legal status of the Royal House of Romania.
The legislative proposal provides its recognition as a private legal entity and the granting of the public utility status. In addition, the law proposes the recognition of the position of the Head of the Royal House of Romania as an honorary position, assimilated in the protocol manner to the Head of State, and includes a number of provisions that will ensure the optimal performance of the activities and functions for its representation, reads a press release.
“These provisions will ensure the ground for a more intense involvement of the Royal House in the Romanian society. More than ever, we need an institution above the party politics, in which Romanian people can see a landmark of balance and continuity”, states the quoted source.
“The Royal House of Romania is a historical institution, which keeps the national traditions and the Romanian state’s values. For almost 100 years, the Royal House of Romania has provided the political balance in Romania, it decisively contributed to forming the Greater Romania and to modernizing the Romanian state. After the World War II, the instauration of a totalitarian regime n Romania was made through a real coup that forced His Majesty King Mihai and the members of the Royal House to go into exile. For almost 50 years, the communist regime made everything it could to make them be forgotten, but it didn’t succeed, as the Romanians’ attachment to the Royal House shows. After 1989, the process of giving the Royal House’s role it deserves and which Romania needs was started. Despite some important steps, the Royal House of Romania doesn’t currently have its own legal personality, which causes great inconveniences not only to itself, but also to the public institutions with which it has partnerships”, according to Tariceanu and Dragnea.
“Today, we are with His Majesty, King Mihai, which has serious health problems, and we believe that this legislative proposal reflects the recognition of the exemplary manner in which His Majesty accomplished his duty towards Romania, and it will also regulate in a predictable and constitutional manner the continuity of a symbol institution of the Romanian state” stated the Speakers of the Senate and Deputies’ Chamber.
