The new stadium in Craiova – inaugurated. Lia Olguta Vasilescu: It’s a dream come true

The “Ion Oblemenco” new stadium of Craiova was inaugurated on Friday evening, in the presence of 30,000 spectators, with a friendly match between CS U Craiova – SK Slavia Prague, an event that was attended by Deputy PM Paul Stanescu, Labour Minister and former mayor of Craiova city Lia Olguta Vasilescu, who stated that the completion of the stadium is “a dream come true.”

Lia Olguta Vasilescu also stated that the new stadium is the most important investment of Craiova city of the past 50 years.

Deputy PM Paul Stanescu said that the stadium represents an important investment not just for Craiova, but for the entire region and even for the entire country.

Before the soccer match, a show of lights, lasers and pyrotechnic effects took place and, on the screens, pictures of important moments in the history of Craiova Maxima were displayed. Andrei Paunescu, the son of the poet Adrian Paunescu, and the former soccer player Gica Craioveanu, played the anthem of Universitatea Craiova, “Oltenia, Eterna Terra Nova”, and a fanfare played the national anthem of Romania. The fans at the northern stand displayed a choreography dedicated to the former player of Universitate Craiova , Ion Oblemenco, whom they called “The God of Oltenians”.

According to the Craiova City Hall, the new stadium, which has approximately 30,000 seats, will be able to host national and international soccer competitions, as well as competitions for other types of sports (rugby, oina, hockey on grass, mini-hockey or American football), but also large-scale cultural and social events, concerts, fairs and exhibitions at the highest standards.

The final value of the construction works is 239,731,352.83 lei (VAT included) and for the new stadium, the Craiova City Hall has established the Administration and Exploitation Stadium Service, within the Patrimony Directorate, under the coordination of the Executive Director, with a functional personnel structure made up of 23 positions.

The construction of the Craiova Sports Complex – Soccer Stadium is a significant investment, being part of the projects included in the Memorandum on significant priority public investment projects, given that it is a large project with a value of over 100 million lei, with a major impact on Craiova, but also on the entire southwestern region of Romania.

Ponta: I regret that I wasn’t invited to the inauguration of the Stadium “Ion Oblemenco”. Dragnea was invited, but he didn’t come. Olguta is the only one who remained, out of the three of us who started the works

The former leader of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) Victor Ponta said he would have wanted to attend the inauguration of the Stadium “Ion Oblemenco” from Craiova, but he wasn’t invited, noticing that Liviu Dragnea was invited but he didn’t come, and concluding that “Olguta is the only one who remained” out of the three persons who started the works at the stadium.

“I regret that I wasn’t invited to the inauguration event, where I would have been so pleased to come – however, I have my collection of memories, my little piece of the old grass, and I am proud of this / politics is not like soccer: I wanted to come, but I wasn’t invited – Liviu Dragnea was invited but he couldn’t come / so, out of the three of us who started the works, Olguta is the only one who remained” the former PM wrote on Facebook, in a Post Scriptum to a post in which he congratulates the authorities and the constructors for finalizing the stadium.

He said he is glad that works have been finalized two years and a half after they have been started, appreciating that both Craiova and the Oltenians “truly deserved an European stadium”.

“I am sure that they will see again, on the new stadium, soccer matches that will remain in history, as well as other kinds of spectacles. Congratulations to the authorities and constructors!” Ponta said.

Victor Ponta and Olguta Vasilescu had several disputes and exchanges, including regarding Ponta’s statements since he was a PSD member, the resignation of the members of the Grindeanu Government, or related to the contributions to the Second Pension Pillar.
