Pope Francisc – honorary member of Romanian Academy

Pope Francisc on Friday unanimously got elected, by open vote, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, upon the proposal of this forum’s Presidium.

“Considering the world-class theological personality of Pope Francisc, his exemplary dedication to people who are seeking a purpose in life, a path of peace and reconciliation, while emphasizing on his desire to help first of all the poor and marginalized; also, considering his special merits in easing the pain of the refugees, persecuted, victims of war, natural calamities and violence; also, while treasuring his friendship with the Romanian people and while embracing his initiatives meant for rebuilding the Christian unity, through supporting the ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and Orthodox in our country, the Romanian Academy Presidium proposes His Holiness Election as a honorary member of the Romanian Academy,” reads the official reasoning of the Romanian Academy Presidium.

The election of Pope Francisc as a honorary member comes after the visit this forum’s leadership paid to Vatican over November 8-13, when the Sovereign Pontiff accepted the honour.

The Vice-President of the Romanian Academy Cristian Hera presented to the General Assembly the context in which the proposal was announced to Pope Francisc.

“In my greeting addressed to His Holiness, I mentioned, among other things, that Pope John Paul the Second accepted and became honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 2001. I wanted thus to link the proposal of the Romanian Academy for His Holiness to accept to become our honorary member with the one made to Pope John Paul the Second, for I knew that he did not accept and wish for such honorary titles. I was happy to hear him saying yes and specifying that he only accepted this for us, out of friendship, and for the Romanian people. These are His Holiness’ words,” said Hera in the release.

On Friday, the General Assembly of the Romanian Academy also tenured by secret vote five of its correspondent members: University Prof. PhD Cristian Sorin Silvestru – Chemical Sciences Section, University Professor PhD. Gheorghe Udubasa – Geonomics Sciences Section, University Professor PhD Mihail-Viorel Badescu – Technical Sciences Section, Professor Emeritus PhD Engineer Ioan Dumitrache
