Several hundred people at protest in Victoria Square, backed by manifestations in Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Sibiu

Several hundred people gathered on Sunday evening in Victoria Square, to protest against the amendments to the Justice laws backed in Parliament by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) – Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) majority, manifestations of lesser scale also taking place in Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Craiova.

The protest unfolded peacefully, Police and Gendarmerie squads being deployed in the area.

People present at manifestations bore tricolour flags and also flags of the United States and blew vuvuzelas and whistles, beat drums to lift spirits.

Protesters spread a huge flag of the EU in the middle of Victoria Square, the seat of the gov’t.

They chanted: “Tired of how much you stole”, Justice, not corruption”, “Firea, resignation”, (Firea – mayor of Bucharest – ed.n.) and “Firea don’t forget, this is not your square”, “Resist, not give in”, “PSD – the red plague.”

The placards held by protesters read “All for Justice”, “Not sold, not a rebel, I am a citizen”, “The only solution, another Constitution.”

Protests also took place in other major cities in the country, approximately 700 people in Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova and Sibiu expressed their discontent with the amendments to the Justice laws and chanted against the Social-Democrats.

In Brasov, starting with 18:00 hrs, protesters gathered in front of the Prefecture where, for an hour and a half, chanted slogans against the Government and the PSD-ALDE Coalition, whistled vuvuzelas, beat drums, waived tricolour flags and chanted: “PSD – the red plague”, “Thieves, thieves”, “Resignation”, “The corrupt and indicted leave governance”, “Equity, Lustration, Justice”, “DNA may take you” (DNA – the National Anti-corruption Directorate – ed.n.), “We don’t want to be a nation of thieves”, “Dragnea and acolytes leave us be.”

In Cluj, protesters also bore placards and banners that read: “No carols this Christmas, this Christmas we protest”, “This can’t go on, either us or them”, “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty”, All for Justice.”

Protesters also chanted “Resignation”, “PSD – the red plague”, “DNA may come take you”, “Thieves”, “Justice, not corruption”, “Dragnea don’t forget, we are waiting for your book too” (most corrupt politicians in prison have published books to have their conviction reduced – ed.n), “Bucharest, don’t forget, Cluj is on your side.”

In Craiova, during the rally, the protesters chanted against PSD and the Social-Democratic leaders: “Join us, they are stealing from you too”, “Don’t want to be nation of thieves”, “Justice, not corruption”, “Another question, Dragnea in prison!” “Thieves, thieves!”, “Government of thieves and mobsters”, “DNA may come and take you.”

In Sibiu, the participants to the authorised protest requested the resignation of the Government and chanted slogans such as “PSD, the red plague”, “Romania, wake up!”, “Don’t stay under blankets, they are stealing from you too”, “Not leaving, we resist!.”
