ForMin Melescanu underscores in Brussels importance of consolidating, deepening NATO – EU relationship

Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu attended the meeting of NATO countries’ foreign ministers, in Brussels, on Tuesday, where he underscored the importance of consolidating and deepening the NATO-EU relationship.

According to a press release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), within the discussions of the meeting, which represents a landmark in preparing the NATO Summit in July 2018, assessed was the progress in implementing the Alliance’s Warsaw Summit’s decisions and the action priorities for the next period especially regarding the NATO-EU cooperation, the open door policy and the role of NATO in the international efforts of stability projection and terrorism combat.

“The Romanian foreign minister underscored the importance of consolidating and deepening the NATO-EU relationship by ensuring the synergy and complementarity between the two organizations, that being a necessity in the current security context.

He stressed the importance of capitalizing to the maximum on the potential of cooperation between NATO and the EU, emphasizing areas such as mobility of forces, combating terrorism, and the support of partner countries in the near vicinity,” the release reads.

At the work luncheon, the allied ministers discussed about the security developments with impact and relevance to the Alliance, including the relationship with Russia and the provocative actions of North Korea.

“Minister Teodor Melescanu highlighted the need for the Alliance to continue to address, in a firm and united manner, the state of instability and insecurity generated by Russia’s actions in Ukraine and its eastern neighborhood, within the framework outlined by the heads of state and government in Warsaw, based on defense measures and dialogue on a reciprocal basis. Moreover, the head of the Romanian diplomacy associated himself to the concerns expressed by the allied ministers regarding the destabilizing actions of the Pyongyang regime, which pose a threat to the Euro-Atlantic and global security, underlining the importance of constant monitoring of these actions and their implications for the Alliance,” reads the press release.
