President Klaus Iohannis stated on Wednesday, when conferring awards upon several educational units, that we once again need the spirit of Spiru Haret and support as strong as possible for schools on the part of the political class.
“There is still far too little discussion about education in the public space. Nevertheless, education and research are two key domains that have significantly contributed to the completion of the Great Union of 1918, and continue to have an important role in the modernisation of Romania. Proof of this is the large number of schools and high schools celebrating their centennial. Let us not forget that before the Union, in several decades, schools were set up, with great efforts, in almost all localities of the Old Kingdom of Romania. Many of the educational units present here were established as part of this effort to raise the cultural level, to reduce the high rate of illiteracy, but also to form citizens capable of taking part in the state’s economic and civic life,” the President stated.
He pointed out that the measures started by the illustrious minister Spiru Haret have shown the immense power that sustained reforms backed in the long term by a political class interested in the modernisation of the state can have.
“Today, we are at a crossroads similar to the one existing at the start of the last century. Romania has integrated itself in the European cultural and political space, and globalisation obliges us to offer our students training comparable to the one that exists in the developed countries of the globe. We need, once again, the spirit of Spiru Haret and support as strong as possible for schools on the part of the political class. The necessary reform directions for the Romanian school are clear, the problem they must answer are visible in the statistics and in numerous internal and international reports. School must contribute to prosperity and the reduction of inequality, should form graduates prepared for the labour market and citizens active in the life of the community and the life of the state,” the Head of State emphasised.
President Iohannis pointed out that the development of education based on a vision and strategy is necessary to avoid legislative chaos or reforms that cancel each other out after a few years.
“I want us to have an education system of quality, that would offer each child a clear and predictable route. Research must become one of Romania’s development pillars in its second century of existence, because our future is linked to the construction of a knowledge-based economy and society,” the President added.
