Wizz Air ended 2017 with a passenger record and plans to continue its expansion in 2018

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in the Central and Eastern Europe and one of the airlines with the highest increase in Europe, announced last week that it carried a record passenger number in 2017, its operations have significantly increased, it placed the biggest aircraft order in the history of the company, it launched a partial sponsorship program for the pioneering pilots and it introduced a number of improvements for the passenger services.

In 2017, Wizz Air carried more than 28 passengers on its routes at low costs, 24% more than in 2016. 14 new aircrafts have joined the Wizz Air fleet, namely 13 Airbus A321 aircrafts and one Airbus 320, which makes the total number of aircrafts to reach 88. The additional aircrafts will directly create other 600 jobs within the company, and more than 3,500 aviation professionals are now working within the airline that has 27 bases in 15 countries, including the most recent WIZZ bases in London Luton, UK, and in Varna, Bulgaria. Wizz Air will also continue to expand its route network with other seven airports and with more than 100 new routes, which means an expansion of the network up to almost 600 routes to 145 destinations in 44 countries.

Another milestone of this year was the fact that Wizz Air has signed the biggest aircraft order with Airbus, in order to purchase in the future other 146 Airbus aircrafts from the A320neo family. The new commitment, once approved by the shareholders of the company, will increase the total order of Airbus aircrafts to 282, which will ensure an aircraft flow until the end of 2026 that will allow the airline to continuously grow and to renew its fleet and maintain it as one of the youngest and most efficient in Europe.

Underlining once again the commitment of the airline to provide passengers with an outstanding experience, Wizz Air has increased the size of the free luggage by 50%, it continued to improve its online platforms, including the website, with cutting-edge technologies and with the WIZZ app for mobile phones, and it launched innovative products (Fare Lock, Flexible Travel Partner) in order to provide even more flexibility to the frequent passengers.

In 2017, Wizz Air, the largest airline in Romania, carried more than 6.8 million passengers on its route with low costs, which is a 28% increase compared to the previous year. During the year, WIZZ has launched 17 new routes in Romania and it expanded its bases in Cluj-Napoca and Craiova, adding two additional aircrafts and thus creating more than 70 direct jobs within the company. Wizz Air is providing not only accessible travel opportunities to the Romanian customers and to the visitors of the country, but it also stimulates the local employment market in the aviation and tourism fields, supporting a number of 5,400 working places in the related industries across the country this year.

By continuing its strong growth, Wizz Air will have 88 million sales places on its routes in Romania in 2018, 16% more than in the previous year. After the already announced expansion for the operations carried out in Romania, Wizz Air will have 24 aircrafts allocated at the six bases, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iasi and Timisoara, and the number of employees oriented to the passengers will exceed 950. WIZZ is also providing low-cost flights from Constanta, Satu-Mare, Suceava and Tirgu Mures. The WIZZ network is currently consisting of 143 routes, including the domestic flight Bucharest – Cluj-Napoca.

By reconfirming its commitment for the Bucharest base, at the end of a record year, with 3.1 million passengers carried and with a 19% increase, Wizz Air announced that it will allocate the 10th aircraft to the Otopeni Airport in June. The expansion of the fleet will allow the airline to launch three new routes from Romania to Athens, Goteborg and Nice. WIZZ is now providing 48 routes from Bucharest to 20 countries.
