JusMin Toader: I wonder why Danish authorities still criticize Romania instead of sending written requests

Minister of Justice Tudorel Toader on Thursday wrote on his social network page that he is going to ask his Danish counterpart on the occasion of the JHA Council to be held in Sofia Bulgaria, why the authorities in this country “prefer critical attitudes against Romania” to making written requests, “as agreed”, related to the Romanian authorities’ commitment to ensure proper detention conditions in penitentiaries.

Toader specified that he reacted thus to the fact that the Danish Prime Minister, Larsk Lokke Rasmusse, on Wednesday asked in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the speeding up of procedures for extradition of foreign detainees and a tougher system for sanctioning countries that do not observe standards in the human rights field.

Moreover, the Minister of Justice reminded that the supreme court in Denmark in 2017 ruled that four Romanian citizens charged with human trafficking cannot be extradited because the conditions in the Romanian penitentiaries would violate their rights.

“In 2017 we had three meetings with the Minister of Justice from Denmark, two meetings with the Ambassador of Denmark in Bucharest and also two delegations of the Danish Parliament visited Romania, all to discuss the same issue! Every time we agreed on the fact that we will offer them assurance in written that we are going to provide proper detention conditions, while they were supposed to send a written request to us in this respect! I wonder why the Danish authorities prefer to have these critical attitudes against Romania, instead of addressing us that written request we agreed upon?,” said Tudorel Toader in his note on Facebook, concluding that he will address the same question to the Minister of Justice from Denmark, in Sofia, on the occasion of the JHA Council.
