Romania will be represented by 25 athletes at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the whole delegation counting for 50 persons, on Thursday said for AGERPRES the chairman of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) Mihai Covaliu.
The seven sport disciplines the Romanian athletes will compete in are as follows: alpine skiing – 3 athletes, cross-country skiing – 3 athletes, biathlon – 6 athletes, ski jumping – 1 athlete, bob – 6 athletes (2-person bobsleigh and 4-person bobsleigh), luge – 5 athletes (2-person luge and individual luge) and skeleton – 1 athlete.
“From the very beginning, we have estimated that we’ll have a 25-30 athletes lot. Finally they are 25. That’s good, the delegation will count for 50 persons and has been given the okay by the Executive Committee. Anyway, the list with our athletes could be completed with yet another 2 athletes. Because surprises could occur if another country gives up its participation, and Romania has got eligible athletes. It is about the 2-person women bobsleigh. So, we could finally count for 27 athletes, now we only have to wait and see,” Covaliu told AGERPRES.
He mentioned that Romania’s goal in the South Korea Winter Olympics is to overtake own records.
“Athletes will depart in three groups, on 31 January, on 1 and 2 February, depending on the moment each of them is due to participate in their competition. And their objective at the Winter Olympic Games is for each one to overcome their best performance ever,” Mihai Covaliu added.
