Sebastian Stan, the Romanian who conquered Hollywood, is the guest of honour at the second edition of the American Independent Film Festival

  • The festival will be held between April 27 and May 3, at Cinema PRO and the Peasant Museum Cinema in Bucharest


The American actor of Romanian origin Sebastian Stan, who plays in some of the most known American film productions, along with actors like Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans or Robert Downey Jr., will come to Bucharest this spring. Sebastian Stan will be the guest of honour of the second edition of the American Independent Film Festival which will be held in Bucharest between April 27 and May 3, 2018, and he will present for the first time in Romania his most recent movie, the biopic “I, Tonya”, directed by Craig Gillespie, with three Oscar nominations, one Golden Globe and five BAFTA Awards nominations.

Other personalities of the American film industry will also be present along with Sebastian Stan at this year’s edition of the American Independent Film Festival, and the festival will continue to bring to Bucharest a selection of the most appreciated recent American independent movies.

Sebastian Stan plays alongside Margot Robbie and Allison Janney in the movie “I, Tonya” (2017), about the famous skater Tonya Harding, one of the most praised movies of the year, with 3 Oscar nominations, Golden Globe for Allison Janney, and 5 BAFTA Awards nominations. The movie will open the American Independent Film Festival of this year, on April 27, and it will be followed by a dialogue with Sebastian Stan. The Romanian public will thus have the chance to find out from the Romanian actor what is like being a movie set colleague with Meryl Streep, Margot Robbie, Anne Hathaway or Ashton Kutcher.

Sebastian Stan is the most popular Romanian actor who succeeded to make his mark in the American film industry. The great directors remarked his charm and talent and co-opted him in Oscar productions. He played alongside Matt Damn in “The Martian” (7 Oscar nominations), while he is part of the cast in another awarded movie, “Black Swan”, along with Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel. He also played in music-halls on Broadway and in the American series which is popular among teenagers “Gossip Girl”. In the latest movie of the “Captain America” trilogy, played in a leading role together with Robert Downey Junior, Scarlet Johansson, Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving and Samuel L. Jackson. The Romanian actor even received some replies in Romanian.

Sebastian Stan was born on August 13, 1982, in Constanta. He moved to Vienna with his mother when he was 8, and at the age of 10 he played his first role in a movie, in “71 fragments of a Chronology of Chance”, directed by the famous Austrian Michael Haneke. Two years later, his family went over the Ocean and settled in Rockland County, New York. Sebastian graduated the Rutgers University in New Jersey and studied at Globe Theater in London for one year.

The first AIFF edition was held in September 2017 and the guest of honour were the actors Ethan Hawke, Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly. Director Barry Jenkins, the winner of the Oscar for the Best Movie in 2017, opened the festival by a Q&A live session broadcast on Skype, at the end of the movie “Moonlight”.

Based on the tradition of the great American narrative movies, the festival aims to present a selection of the latest independent productions made in USA, titles that are appreciated by criticists and presented in the circuit of the great North American festivals such as Sundance, New York, Tribeca, Telluride or Toronto. The second edition of the American Independent Film Festival will be held from April 27 to May 3, 2018, at Cinema PRO and the Peasant Museum Cinema in Bucharest.
