“This is right time for accession to Schengen Area” for Romania, considering that the country is currently preparing to take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union next year, with our country being thus “prepared for this step”, Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu stated on Monday.
Negrescu spoke with the participants in the Transylvanian School of Politics and detailed on the current stage of preparations for Romania’s presidency of the Council of the EU in 2019 and related challenges.
The Minister-delegate reminded about the efforts made for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area.
“When we talk about Schengen, this is clear a priority. And, I sometimes need to say this, I am very actively promoting this objective of Romania’s accession to Schengen. When I was in the European Parliament and I collected approximately 43,000 signatures that I submitted to the European Parliament and the European Commission answered that it will fully supports this objective and more than a half of the member states wrote to me, ministers of interior or ministers of justice, that they supported this,” Negrescu pointed out.
He also underscored that, in what concerns Schengen accession, “Romania meets all the criteria.”
The future presidency of the EU Council to be taken over by our country represents an advantage in this respect, he highlighted.
The Minister also talked about the fact, a month ago, the working groups related to Romania’s accession to Schengen restarted their activity.
