USR asks Eugen Teodorovici to change Fiscal Code so as not to bury the activity of NGOs

Save Romania Union (USR) has asked Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici to come up with changes to the Fiscal Code so as not to bury the activity of NGOs, claiming that many NGOs will disappear because companies whose turnover falls below EUR 1 million can no longer redirect 2 percent of the profit tax to NGOs.

“The modification of the fiscal and legislative framework that regulates the amending and supplementing of Government Ordinance no.26/2000, initiated by the Social Democrats, serves only to create obstacles and deter the proper activity of non-profit organisations that rely on people’s donations and on the redirection of 2 percent of the profit tax. The Fiscal Code amendments according to which companies whose turnover falls below EUR 1 million can no longer redirect 2 percent toward NGOs, and that Fiscal Statement 230 should be personally lodged by the donator, will lead to the disappearance of many associations and NGOs who operate based on donations and charity actions,” according to a press release quoted by Mediafax.

USR points out that they started a legislative initiative demanding the return to the previous turnover threshold of EUR 500,000, instead of EUR 1 million, and reiterates that they have already filed amendments to the Fiscal Code Law in order to hike to 3.5 percent the share of the profit tax that can be redirected to NGOs.

“Romanian NGOs actively contribute to the improvement and development of society, considering that their main domains of activity are channelled toward social services, education, environment, animal protection and culture. That is why we are asking Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici to communicate what are the measures he has ordered to eliminate red tape in order to ease the non-governmental organisations’ access to private funds,” reads the press release.
