PM Dancila welcomes Chinese ambassador Xu to discuss intensifying political dialogue, strengthening economic cooperation

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on Wednesday welcome Chinese ambassador to Romania Feihong Xu at the Government House in Bucharest to emphasise the desire to intensify the political dialogue and strengthen the economic co-operation between Romania and China.

“The dialogue of the two officials was constructive and warm, with both welcoming the dynamics in the bilateral relations within the framework of the Comprehensive Friendship and Cooperation Partnership between Romania and China and highlighting the desire to intensify the political dialogue and strengthen the economic cooperation between the two countries,” according to press statement released by the Government.

Dancila thanked Xu for the congratulatory message on the occasion of her inauguration, extended by Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

Mentioning economic co-operation, Dancila stated Romania’s main objective: “to gradually balance its bilateral trade balance with China by increasing Romanian exports to China.”

“An increase in the export of Romanian food products and of the products with a high added value can contribute to achieving this balance in the future,” the prime minister said.

Another item on the agenda of the meeting was “transport and energy cooperation.”

In the field of transport, Dancila expressed Romania’s interest in cooperating with China in road infrastructure, shipping and air transport projects.

She also thanked Xu for China’s interest in the development of Romania’s railway infrastructure from a national perspective and also in the context of regional connectivity.

In the energy field, Dancila highlighted Romania’s strengths both in terms of geographic positioning and energy resources, which could be an incentive for Chinese investors. Also approached was cooperation between the two countries in the area of nuclear energy.

Dancila and Xu also mentioned the need to facilitate people-to-people contacts and support bilateral tourism.

Both parties expressed their readiness for active and constructive cooperation within the 16 + 1 cooperation format, in order to capitalise on the full potential it presents.
