Lidl Romania has completed its new headquarters, one of the most sustainable office buildings in Romania

Lidl Romania has completed the construction and arrangement of the new headquarters of the company, an innovative and complex project, streamlined for the lowest impact on the environment. The office building has benefited from cutting-edge construction technologies and includes endowments and facilities at European standards. At the same time, with moving into the new premises, the Lidl employees will enjoy multiple benefits, such as a fitness room, canteen or coffee shop.

The building’s area has more than 12,500 sqm and is located in the vicinity of the greenest store in the Lidl portfolio. The Lidl Romania headquarters consists of two separate but interconnected buildings the first one has four floors and includes the facilities areas for employees, while the second one has six floors and consists of two symmetric wings with offices. The ensemble hosts numerous wide spaces dedicated to the office activities, and a number of modern facilities, created for the comfort of the employees.

“Sustainability was a criterion that we considered in all the company’s approaches in almost seven years of Lidl presence on the local market. Our headquarters that we inaugurate today is also part of this standard. This is a project designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, in line with the reference standards in terms of efficiency, and it also has excellent facilities for our employees” stated Frank Wagner, the president of the Board of Directors of Lidl Romania.

Solutions and technologies for a better future

Made in partnership with Skanska, the building was designed to fulfill the requirements of the BREEAM British assessment system, the highest standard in terms of sustainability and efficiency existing in the industry.

The project used certified construction, recycled and recyclable materials, integrating at the same time some of the most advanced technological solutions available in the construction field. The building uses exclusively sustainable construction materials: FSC-certified wood (the only global forest management certification system), BES6001-certified concrete, and other ISO 14001-certified materials, a guarantee of the controlled origin. Moreover, 50% of the                 thermal insulation is made of recycled materials.

The high level of energy efficiency of the new premises is possible due to innovative, sustainable solutions. The smart façade of the building incorporates an automatic shading system, which allows the shutters to be adjusted, depending on the sun’s intensity and position. Moreover, the system is provided with a tri-pan glass, which helps in minimizing the heat transfer.

Regardless of the season, the heating and cooling of the entire building are provided exclusively by a system of 78 geothermal wells and heat pumps, complete by 6 air treatment plants, for an optimal indoor ambiance. At the same time, the headquarters uses a LED lighting system with sensors, which makes electricity consumption to be more efficient.

Multiple new benefits for employees

The concept of the Lidl headquarters, “The Surprising Romania”, integrates both the company’s commitment for sustainability, and its objective to surprise its employees with modern facilities, for a higher comfort at the working place. Each level of the building is associated to a region of the country, and part of the 25 meeting rooms are named with the name of some unique and surprising places in Romania.

The employees are welcomed every morning with fresh fruits, available all the day, in the relaxing places. Moreover, they can prepare anytime a coffee or a tea, using the espresso machines in the modern kitchenettes located near their office, or they can buy a coffee from the coffee shop arranged at the 4th floor of the building. In this modern relaxing place which also includes a large terrace, the employees can enjoy a TED’s coffee and they can use this space for meetings and talks with their colleagues from other departments, or with their business partners.

The working activity is carried out in open-space offices, which can accommodate up to 360 individual spaces.

One of the main facilities for employees is the fitness room of 230 sqm, endowed with cutting-edge equipment. The employees can have their meal at the canteen located at the ground floor of the building, which offers a varied and tasty menu, prepared with Lidl products and ingredients, both for breakfast and for lunch.

The new Lidl headquarters is provided with 233 parking seats, located underground and above the ground level – enough seats for the employees who wish to come at the office by car, 7 charging stations for electric cars, and 40 seats for those who opt-out to come at the office with their bike.
