Three Romanians returned to the country reach a turnover of EUR 350,000 in naval architecture after one year of activity

  • 3 young men establish the first business in the naval architecture field in the last 5 years in Romania, after an experience achieved on the big European markets.
  • The young men are working with companies from Romania, Norway and Poland and they have reached a turnover of EUR 350,000 in 2017, expecting a 115% growth this year.

Alin Pohilca, Liviu Galatanu and Liviu Moise are three young men barely aged 30, who left Romania right after they graduated from the faculty, going to European cities where the naval consultancy and design industry has a well-established tradition. But in 2016, they founded the first local naval design company in the last 5 years. In 2017, GLO Marine has achieved a turnover of more than EUR 350,000, expecting a 115% growth in 2018.

The GLO MARINE founders are naval architects with an experience of more than 7 years in the industry, who have worked for some of the most important companies in the field at international level: DNV GL, Subsea7, Petrofac and Global Maritime. Thus they accrued technical and management experience, which allowed them to implement in Romania a new model of companies and client relationships. This approach brought them the first local client, VARD Tulcea, one of the most important shipyards in the country. Also, the company has foreign clients in Norway and Poland, with which it works for structural stability and analysis projects.

“We have been working closely with GLO MARINE over the past year, and I can certainly say that they have met the deadlines and the quality required by the contract. It’s a young company, but their commitment, their work capacity and their modern project management make them be very efficient and flexible. I am confident that if they will continue like this, they will be a reliable long-term partner of VARD Tulcea” stated the Vice President of the Technical Department of VARD SA, Eugen Tanasescu.

GLO Marine started its activity in the second half of 2016, and the team was consisting only of the three founders. The assigned projects led to a fast increase in the workload and the number of employees. Today, 20 engineers with a high level of specialization form three departments: body design, locksmith and piping.

The total investment in financing this business exceeded EUR 40,000 during the first 5 months of activity, the funds coming from their own sources or from bank loans. The money was used to purchase high-performance computer technique, as well as to develop the team. This investment was recovered at the end of 2017, and today the business brings profit.

In 2017, 75% of the company’s revenues came from contracts with Romanian companies, and 25% of the revenues came from consultancy contracts with companies from abroad (Poland and Norway). The plans for the next years imply the growth of the client portfolio and a higher share of the turnover from the contracts concluded abroad.

“Since the beginning, we planned to develop a smart and long-term stable business, in which we answer to the need of consultancy, which is currently poorly covered in Romania in this field” explained Liviu Moise, Technical Manager at GLO Marine. “We are investing a lot in training our staff and in the client relationships at global level, in order to strengthen the reputation of the Romanian professional services. Due to the strong beginning registered in the first year of activity, we are confident that we can double the turnover in 2018”.

For 2018, the three entrepreneurs forecast a significant growth of the business, expecting a turnover of more than EUR 750,000, an increase of more than 100% in revenue, in the context of stabilizing the company’s structure and of the development of the relations with the strategic partners in the industry at European level.

The GLO MARINE head office is located in Galati, the city with the largest network of professionals in the field, thanks to the Faculty of Naval Architecture of the Dunarea de Jos Galati University and to the connection with the port cities of Galati, Braila, Tulcea and Constanta. The three young men also established a consultancy office in UK, in order to benefit from a strategic approach to the major European companies in the industry, operating in England.

“The GLO Marine team consists of young and dynamic people who have development ideas and an experience between 3 and 10 years. Their experience is accumulated in naval design companies and in renowned shipyards. Some of them had the courage to waive jobs abroad in order to join our project. Our company’s success is due to the employees and to the quality of their training in the field” said Liviu Galatanu, Operations Manager at GLO Marine.

GLO Marine is a company which provides a wide range of consultancy and naval design services. The consultancy services include calculations of stability, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and structures both for marine and offshore vessels – new and operating vessels.

In terms of design, the company provides high quality concept services, basic and detail design, actually covering the whole naval design field. Our portfolio currently includes 8 cruise vessel projects, a project for a research and expedition specialized vessel and one fishing vessel project, mainly on detail design, providing body design, reinforcement and locksmith services, as well as naval piping services.
