In Memoriam Herbert Stein

Herbert Stein, founder of AutoItalia, passed away on Wednesday, at the age of 87.

The public announcement regarding the passing away of the man who laid the basis of the modern auto vehicle trade in Romania in the early 1990s was made through an official communique issued by the auto company that he founded. A message posted on Facebook by Dante Stein, one of his sons, points out that the death had natural causes.

“Herbert Stein was one of the local business pioneers, with a strong vision on the development of the auto market in Romania, investing with a lot of enthusiasm in this industry in the early 1990s. Due to his skills, he built a successful business with AutoItalia. (…) His devotion to the company, but also the management style adopted, encouraged and inspired thousands of people who were fortunate to work alongside the late visionary. Herbert Stein the man knew how to be a mentor for generations of employees and helped those in difficulty every time he had this possibility. He energised himself with the energy of those around him, and kindness was never in short supply with him,” reads a Facebook posting made by AutoItalia employees.

“Herbert Stein THE MAN knew how to be a mentor for generations of employees and helped those in difficulty every time he had this possibility. He energised himself with the energy of those around him, and kindness was never in short supply with him!” reads an official AutoItalia announcement.

Israeli-born businessman Herbert Stein founded the AutoItalia auto vehicle import company in 1993. At first, he imported FIAT Group cars, and then also distributed Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep, Maserati, SsangYong auto vehicles, Honda motorcycles and Segway transport vehicles.

In 2011, AutoItalia, a company owned by Herbert and Dante Stein until the autumn of that year, was bought by Levy Group, a Tel Aviv-based company owned by the family of businessman Michael Levy, for over EUR 15 million.

The Nine O’Clock editorial office expresses its regret for Herbert’s disappearance and conveys its condolences to the bereaved family. Herbert Stein will remain in our memory not only as a great professional of the modern auto trade – our publications having gotten involved alongside him and AutoItalia in many beautiful joint projects over the years – but especially as a great MAN and FRIEND.
