Senate defeats opposition motion against European Funds Minister Plumb

At a plenary session on Tuesday, the Senate defeated a simple motion tabled by the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) and the People’s Movement Party (PMP) called “The absorption of community funds, a PSD-ALDE [Social Democratic Party – Alliance of Liberals and Democrats] branded catastrophe” against Minister of European Funds Rovana Plumb.

There were 40 ayes, 72 nays and one abstention.

Prior to the vote, PNL’s Eugen Pirvulescu has read the text of the motion which signed by 35 PNL and PMP senators is read out by

The signatories of the motion were calling Plumb to resign, blaming her for what they call the disaster of structural funds management in Romania.

“Dear Minister Rovana Plumb, if you have the necessary decency, we are expressly asking you to resign from the leadership of the Ministry of European Funds! You have proved that you are not able to bring the money that the European Union has made available to us. The European Union gives the milk, but it does not give the pail,” showed the simple motion.

PNL and PMP argue that “incompetence, lack of professionalism, including the lack of performance criteria applied to officials who should be assessed on the basis of successfully implemented projects, negligence, lack of transparency at the level of the ministry responsible for the management of EU funds have all led to the situation in which we are fining ourselves today.”

“We want to draw attention to the critical situation in which we find ourselves, and once again ask for the resignation of the Minister of European Funds, Rovana Plumb.”
