The Romanian-US cooperation in the defence area represents an essential contribution for the Euro-Atlantic security, for ensuring stability in the Black Sea region and also it is a model for the region, Romania’s Ambassador in Washington, D.C. George Maior stated on Wednesday in a speech that he delivered at the event, where he was the main guest, organised by the Heritage Foundation on the future of the US-Romania missile defense cooperation, according to a release of Romania’s Embassy to the US.
Against the backdrop of ballistic threats at regional and global level, Ambassador Maior highlighted the relevance of the bilateral cooperation on the missile defence dimension. In this regard, he underscored that the Aegis Ashore Romania represents a major bilateral strategic project and a reconfirmation of the importance of the Romanian-US cooperation for Romania’s and NATO’s security, as well as a guarantee of the transatlantic solidarity.
The Romanian diplomat mentioned in this regard the complexity of the security environment in the Black Sea region and on the entire eastern flank, underscoring the necessity to strengthen the allied defence and deterrence posture, including through the presence of the US forces and allies in the area.
In this context, Maior pointed out Romania’s effort to fulfill the commitments assumed inside NATO and for developing the national defence capabilities: the allocation of two percent of the GDP to Defence, upgrading the Romanian armed forces and the purchase of up-to-date equipment, which also creates perspectives for the cooperation of profile industries.
Furthermore, Ambassador Maior stressed the necessity to continue the support for the partner countries in the region, especially for the Republic of Moldova, including in view of maintaining their European journey.
