The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA)’s prosecutors have decided the prosecution of Gabriel Oprea, at the date of the deed Deputy Prime minister for National Security and Internal Affairs minister, for manslaughter in the criminal file regarding the road accident that provoked the death of police officer Bogdan Gigina.
According to DNA, since he took the Internal Affairs minister position, at the beginning of 2014, Gabriel Oprea ordered – by breaching the legal provisions on the accompanying dignitaries by the road police – to be permanently accompanied by a road police crew, and starting from June 2015, he ordered that this crew will also include a motorcyclist road police officer. Thus, he conferred to himself, by a discretionary manner, “rights” that weren’t included in the legal framework, “rights” whose exercise caused high-risk situations for road police officers, and he ordered that the movement of the road police crews has to be carried out in a high speed manner.
“I trust that justice will be fair and will restore the indisputable truth – I am innocent “
Former Interior minister Gabriel Oprea claims that he had no additional benefits compared to other Interior ministers, that he has always respected and loved the military coat, that he has respected the law and that he was concerned with ensuring better working conditions for militaries and police officers, throughout his activity as a Deputy Prime minister, Minister of Defense and Interior minister. He also claims he is innocent and that he trusts that “justice will be fair and will restore the indisputable truth”.
“After more than two and a half years since the terrible accident in which police officer Bogdan Gigina dies, I was sent to court in the case in which I was wrongly accused. Police officer Bogdan Gigina’s death is a boundless tragedy, a huge loss for which I am not guilty! I say it today, as I said it every time. And I will prove my innocence before the court. As a minister, I had no additional benefits compared to other Interior ministers. I have always respected and loved the military coat. Besides fulfilling my attributions with responsibility and by observing the law, I was concerned with ensuring better working conditions for militaries, police officers and contract staff, as well as with improving their living, throughout my activity as a Deputy Prime minister, Minister of National Defense and Internal Affairs minister” says Gabriel Oprea. He claims that his actions and “concrete measures adopted throughout the mandates he had as the head of these institutions, which cannot be denied or hidden”, are a proof to this end.
In a message posted on Facebook shortly after DNA’s announcement, Gabriel Oprea also said that on the evening of October 20, 2015, he was coming from an office activity, from a state institution, and there wasn’t any official motorcade, but an accompanying crew. He also denied that he requested a certain speed for the rides.
“(…) I never requested a certain speed for the rides. The questions related to the opportuneness of the presence, at that time, of the motorcyclist police officer, to the speed of the crew and other elements concerning the organization and planning of the missions, must be addressed to the road police, which is in charge with these issues. In this case, prosecutors claimed that the works from the place where the accident happened weren’t properly signaled. Also, there is mentioned in the file that the car in which I was had a lower speed than the legal maximum speed, which proves very clearly that there was no emergency for that ride. The Senate has rejected through a vote the request to approve my criminal prosecution. Yet, I decided to resign from Parliament and I made myself available to justice. I am a man for whom honor was and will always be very important. I trust that justice will be right and will restore the indisputable truth: I am innocent” the former Deputy Prime minister also claims.
