DHL Carpathian Marathon supports the Paralympic athletes this year, too

This year’s edition of DHL Carpathian Marathon is expected to be extremely interesting. It brings a lot of novelties, such as the complete change of the venue, new routes, challenging mountain experiences, as announced by the organizers at a press conference. The competition will take place on June 16, at Cheile Gradistei – Fundata. But the most important thing is maintaining the concern for supporting the activity of the Paralympic athletes also this year. Thus, for the fourth year in a row, all the proceeds from subscription fees will be transferred to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC).

Being at its 9th edition, DHL Carpathian Marathon imposed as a notorious event. In the 2005-2017 period, more than 6,700 runners toed the line in the competition, while almost 500 important companies decided to join the teams at the starting line. The collected funds, more than EUR 127,000, were donated to NGOs: the “Hospice Casa Sperantei” Foundation, the “Noi Orizonturi-Familia” Association, the “Light Into Europe” Foundation, “Salvati Copiii Romania” and the National Paralympic Committee. The three years of partnership with NPC materialized in more than EUR 40,000 donated; there were EUR 15,000 donated only in 2017, collected from the participation fee paid by the 1,500 marathoners.

Being organized with the support of MPG, market leader in the segment of the sports projects dedicated to the amateur practitioners, and of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, DHL Carpathian Marathon is an event dedicated to all those who love to move, both the experienced ones and the amateur runners who wish to have a unique experience in a spectacular setting. Those who are passionate about running may opt for one of the 42 categories of contest, for Marathon (42 km), Semi-Marathon (21 km), Relay (7 km – in teams of 3 or 6 people), while children aged between 5 and 14 years can participate in Kids Race, on a rout ranging from 250 meters to 1 km, depending on the age. Participants under 18 have more options to join this mountain adventure: Semi-Marathon, Relay, or Kids Race. The minimum age for subscribing to the available races is: 14 years for Relay, 16 years for Semi-Marathon, and 18 years for Marathon.

“One of the reasons for moving the location is so that it gives us the opportunity to grow the event, to have more participants, to have more people doing sport. Most important is that we raise more money for the support of the National Paralympic Committee, which is doing an incredible job” stated the General Manager of DHL Express Romania, Daniel Kearvell, at the press conference.

The NPC President Sally Wood Lamont stated at the press conference: “We are Paralympic, but we are not different. We have to work to get points in the international rankings, we have to qualify for each competition, world championship, we have the same existing stages in each sport. The ambassadors who are beside us are very important to us, and I thank to them in the name of the athletes”. She also mentioned that the sponsorships to be obtained following this year’s edition of DHL Carpathian Marathon will help the Paralympic athletes start the training for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. “With DHL, we managed to double the number of qualified athletes at Rio. At Rio, we participated with the largest team in Romania’s history, we had 12 qualified athletes. Starting from 2015, we recruited many young people, too. Youngsters are the future in sports. People with disabilities making a sport get more confident and change their lives” Sally added.

One of the athletes involved into this project is Ciprian Anton, national tennis champion in wheelchair. He says that one of the important objectives of the Paralympic athletes is to become or re-become independent through sports.

“Discover new horizons. Give value to your race! Take part!”

This year’s ambassadors of DHL Carpathian Marathon are Gabriela Szabo, Andreea Raducan, Constantina Dita, Miodrag Belodedici, nutritionist Serban Damian, Sonia Argint Ionescu, Eli Roman, Dragos Bucurenci, Andrei Rosu, Marian Dragulescu and Chef Simona Pope. “This year I will also be at the starting line of DHL Carpathian Marathon, on June 16, running at the Relay category. I want us to have as many runners as possible also in 2018, this is the only way to donate an as large amount of money as possible to the National Paralympic Committee.
