Fifth edition of Italian Wine and Food Day kicks off

The fifth edition of the event called “Italian Wine and Food Day” will take place on Wednesday, May 23, at the Panoramic Hall of the Marshal Garden Hotel from Bucharest, being organized by the Italian Trade Agency (e.n. – ICE) under the patronage of the Italian Embassy. More than eighty local companies, importers, distributors and buyers from the big retail and Ho.Re.Ca. networks, gastronomy stores and wine-bars will enjoy the unique taste of the food and wine products Made in Italy.

The event, which benefits from the support of the HoReCa media partners, Horeca Insight and Trends HRB, is included in the program of the tenth edition of the Italian Festival and aims to promote a sector of excellence, to strengthen the trade relations, to increase the export of wine and food products to Romania, as well as to bring Romanian consumers closer to the Italian tastes and flavors.

In the opening of the event, a short movie called “The Fifth Element”, which promotes the agro-food Italian system made by ICE, will be screened.

On this occasion, an expert of the consultancy company KeysFin will present the perspectives of the Romanian HORECA field and wine market. The seminar will end with the speech of a local expert in the HORECA/Retail field and with a brief presentation of the exhibiting Italian companies.

In the following session, the thirteen Italian companies invited by the ICE Agency, representing several  Italian regions, will be presented. The moment will be followed by a wine and other food tasting, and last but not least, by B2B meetings between companies and local operators: wine and/or food importers/distributors, buyers, purchasers of restaurants, F&B managers of hotels, managers and buyers from wine stores, sommeliers, gourmet stores, wine-bars, journalists of the specialized and general press.

The products exhibited by the Italian producers cover a wide range of excellence Made in Italy: wines and sparkling wines, liqueurs, olive oil, canned food, specific cheeses and sausage, sweets, pasta, etc.

The Italian statistics indicate that exports of agro-food and wine products exceeded EUR 40 billion in 2017 (7.7% higher than in 2016), encouraging the expectations to fulfill the objective of reaching EUR 50 billion at the end of the decade.

2017 was an exceptional year for the Italian wine, whose exports increased by 7%, reaching EUR 6 billion, which is an absolute historical record.

Italy is the European country with the largest number of agro-food products with an origin denomination and geographical indication recognized by the European Union: there are 817 of such products, of which 294 products are DOP, IGP and STG products, and 523 wines are DOCG, DOC and IGT wines. This is an additional testimony of the high quality of the “Made in Italy” products, and especially of the strong link between the Italian agro-food excellence and the territory of origin.


In the 2017 ranking of the partner countries of Italy, Romania ranks 13th in the EU countries and 19th in the world as a destination country for the exports of food products and beverages amounting to EUR 385.8 million (7.2% higher than in 2016), being also an important supplier of such products for Italy, with EUR 327.9 million (ranking 21st in the ranking of all supplier countries and 13th in the EU countries).

The main Italian agro-food products exported to Romania in 2017 were: fruits and vegetables (EUR 75.3 million), sweets (EUR 52.6 million), meat and meat products (EUR 45.7 million), various food products (EUR 43.6 million), coffee (EUR 37.3 million), dairy and cheese (EUR 27.9 million), canned vegetables (EUR 23.1 million), fish and canned fish (EUR 19.5 million), wine (EUR 12.1 million), pasta (EUR 11.7 million) and alcoholic beverages (EUR 10 million).

The main products exported by Romania to Italy in the same year were: vegetable products, cereals (EUR 137.7 million), fruits and vegetables (EUR 57.9 million), meat and meat products (EUR 36 million) sweets (EUR 13 million), dairy and cheese (EUR 10.8 million), honey (EUR 8.1 million), various food products (EUR 8 million), rice (EUR 5.7 million), canned fruits and vegetables (EUR 3.7 million), mineral water and soft drinks (EUR 2.8 million) and alcohol and alcoholic beverages (EUR 2.6 million).

The Italian Festival (May 16 – June 12) organized by ICE – the Italian Agency for Foreign Trade in Bucharest, under the patronage of the Italian Embassy, in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute, brings together a series of events promoting the Made in Italy products: promotions for food products, fashion, furniture, promotions in the Italian partner restaurants, cultural events and more.
