Minister-delegate for European Affairs Negrescu: General Data Protection Regulation allows cutting red tape, boosting innovation

Romania’s Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu has announced the entry into force on Thursday of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, saying that this will cut through red tape, while boosting innovation.

“The purpose of adopting the GDPR resides in the need to modernise and consolidate data protection rules in the member states so as to cut through red tape and increase consumer confidence to the benefit of enterprises, and also to better protect the rights of individuals,” according to a press statement released on Friday by Romania’s Foreign Ministry (MAE).

The regulation lays down new requirements on transparency, strengthening the rights to information, access and deletion of data, increased protection against data breaches, and gives the member states’ data protection authorities the possibility to impose sanctions on operators, such as sizeable fines. The protection of personal data guaranteed by the regulation remains associated with data transferred outside the European Union, securing a high level of protection.

“This unique set of rules, to which I contributed while I was a member of the European Parliament, is intended to guarantee legal certainty for businesses and to give individuals the same rights, obligations and responsibilities in all member states. GDPR is designed to create business opportunities, enabling businesses to reduce red tape and rely on increased consumer confidence while also boosting innovation; estimates show that it will help reduce costs by 2.3 billion euros a year,” Negrescu is quoted as saying in the statement.

He also talks about the authorities’ support in this regard. “We are prepared to guide all those who will face different situations in the current activity, along with the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing, the privacy watchdog,” says Negrescu.
