Gabriel Vlase confirmed by Parliament as SIE Director

On Wednesday, Parliament’s joint plenum confirmed Gabriel Vlase, President Klaus Iohannis’s nomination, as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE). The MPs voted with paper ballots, the result being 340 votes in favour and 31 against.

On June 14, President Klaus Iohannis sent a letter to the Speakers of Parliament, nominating House lawmaker Petru-Gabriel Vlase (PSD) as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service.

Gabriel Vlase is Vice President of PSD, on his fourth term as representative of Buzau County in the Lower House, and Deputy Speaker of the House. According to his resume, he has a Ph.D. in military science and intelligence from the National Intelligence Academy (ANI). In 2015, Vlase’s name appeared in the dossier concerning the illegal restitution of forests in Buzau County, a dossier in which former House lawmaker Viorel Hrebenciuc received a two-year executory prison sentence in May 2018.

Dragnea: For a year and a half SIE has been under unconstitutional leadership because the President did not consider this Service important and did not consider it important for him to exercise his constitutional prerogatives

PSD President Liviu Dragnea stated on Wednesday that the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) has been under “unconstitutional leadership” for a year and a half because the Head of State did not consider this institution important and did not nominate someone at its helm. Likewise, Dragnea stated that he wished Gabriel Vlase good luck before Parliament’s confirmation vote and he hopes Vlase’s training and knowledge would allow him to lead SIE.

“SIE, for a year and a half, has been under unconstitutional leadership, because the director that had to be appointed by Parliament was missing since the President did not consider this Service, this institution, important and did not consider it important for him to exercise, within reasonable time, his constitutional prerogatives in what regards this nomination. Eventually, better late than never,” Liviu Dragnea said.

He said that he wished Gabriel Vlase good luck and he hopes his training and knowledge would help him lead the Service.

“I believe Mr Gabriel Vlase will have sufficient votes to be appointed SIE Director. I’ve wished him good luck. I hope that the knowledge he has, the training he has, and the good faith I hope he has, would help him lead the Service together with the team there, the team from SIE, professional workers, most of them unknown, who are risking their lives and are doing many things for Romania. He should make sure this institution creates serious advantages for Romania, from both a strategical and an economic standpoint. That’s all concerning the appointment at SIE, which puts an end to a period of instability for the institution,” the leader of Social Democrats concluded.
