On Saturday, July 7, starting at 11.00, the TEI Student’s Cultural Complex in Bucharest will host the second edition of the event called Baseball Festival, a competition between the national baseball teams of Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria and a team from the United States of America represented by the soldiers stationed at the military base Mihai Kogalniceanu.
The access is free, and the event will be opened with an All Star Game demonstration, with teams consisting of players from the 4 teams. The show is part of the Jackie Robinson project, which promotes the partnership between the United States of America and Romania over the past 100 years, and is organized by the US Embassy in Romania, the National School of Political Science and Public Administration – SNSPA, and the Romanian Baseball and Softball Federation.
Baseball Festival promises an American show, contests with prizes for spectators, a food corner and many other surprises. Those who will be there will have the opportunity to get in touch with the ball and the baseball equipment, will hit the target and will meet players of the participating teams. It’s for the second time when the soldiers from the American base located at Mihail Kogalniceanu will come to Bucharest for a competition of this kind.
Last year, the first edition of Baseball Festival gathered 1,500 spectators, including the Olympic champions Gabriela Szabo and Mihai Covaliu.
The Romanian team won with 6-4 against the United States of America team represented by the soldiers located at the military base Mihail Kogalniceanu.
The event was also attended by stars of MLB (the professional baseball league in USA), as well as by the daughter of the famous Jackie Robinson, the first African American athlete accepted in the American professional league. The event is an occasion to promote tolerance, team play, participatory spirit and democratic values. Baseball is a growing sport in Romania; today, there are more than 20 clubs in various areas of the country.
