Liviu Dragnea and Calin Popescu Tariceanu, leaders of the PSD-ALDE coalition, met on Monday in the office of the House Speaker, where they discussed, among other things, about the possibility of impeaching Head of State Klaus Iohannis, political sources told MEDIAFAX.
On July 11, PSD leader Liviu Dragnea stated that President Klaus Iohannis did not intend to sign the decree dismissing from office the Chief Prosecutor of the DNA but feared impeachment, wanting a second term in office to maintain his immunity. He pointed out that the impeachment of the Head of State is a plan that still stands.
“At this hour I don’t know what should happen for this process to take place in the autumn. We are talking about parliamentarians. It’s not mandatory [for it to take place] in autumn. Things can happen. I talked with my colleagues on Monday. I told them they can go on parliamentary vacation, but they should have their phones on them because we might meet,” Liviu Dragnea told Antena3.
“Nothing of what he has said and done so far gives me hope something might intervene. I don’t want to force anyone, it’s a discussion,” the PSD leader added.
On the other hand, on July 12, Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated that, as long as the Head of State observes the Constitution, he does not know if the impeachment is still a priority.
“As long as the President observes the Constitution, lets things evolve normally in this overture to uncover the filth, I don’t know if the impeachment will be a priority. There must be a solid and constitutional overture. I believe we must reach a T0 moment. What do we do with these thousands of dossiers in which the procedural flaws are obvious? The acts of judicial police are clear. What do we do with them? Do we leave them like this?” Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated for Antena3.
